What Do We Know About Insomniac Games’ Upcoming Spider-Man Game?

Let’s face it: It’s been a while since a really good Spider-Man game has come out for consoles. So far, the most decent ones out there (in this writer’s opinion, at least) have been Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, and 2004’s Spider-Man 2. So, it’s with hopeful trepidation that we’re bringing you some updates, and a webload of info on what we know (so far) about the upcoming Spidey game from Ratchet and Clank developer, Insomniac Games.

Since the game was announced at last year’s E3 conference, we’re hoping to see more about it this year. However, there’s been absolutely no confirmation from either Insomniac Games about any kind of announcement or reveal. The developer has only been tweeting that they’re working on the game, but there’s been no mention of anything about E3. We’re still going to keep our eyes glued to the Sony presentation this year in hopes that we hear something.

One thing we’re hearing about the title that gives us some hope, comes from Jay Ong, the Senior VP of Games & Innovation over at Marvel. Recently, Ong gave an interview to Gamespot, in which he talked about the developers which Marvel chooses to work with needing to have “a passion” for Marvel’s IPs. The fact that this Spider-Man title is being developed by the same dev who brought us the smash-hit Ratchet and Clank series, also really helps gamers breathe a cautious sigh of relief.

C’Mon! This looks pretty amazing, right? From what we’re hearing from Insomiac Games, this is all in-game footage, too. Considering how polished this game looks now, we’re thinking it’ll look even better on launch day (which we hope isn’t too far off). With as nimble and acrobatic as our Friendly Neighborhood Web-Head looks in this trailer, gamers can most likely look forward to some fun city traversal and combat maneuvers. If we take into account the truck sequence, as well as the indoor & rooftop fights, it looks like this version of Manhattan is just begging to be explored and webbed up.

So when will this game be released? Well, officially, we don’t know. However, Marvel Digital Media VP & executive editor Ryan Penagos may have slipped up and given us more info than he meant to. Penagos hosted a livestream recently, which was snatched up by Reddit user GamingSince95, in which he stated that “There’s even more on the horizon for 2017, like Spider-Man coming to PlayStation 4 and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite coming to Xbox One, PS4, and Windows PC.” Judging by that, dear readers, Spidey may be ready for us to play by the holidays this year, which would most likely mean that we’ll be hearing more about it at this year’s E3 conference. When questioned about this, however, Insomniac Games was quick to reply on Twitter. The tweet was then shared by Penagos, which just makes his statement look all the more legit.

Next, let’s take a look at the name: Spider-Man PS4. That’s gotta just be a working title, right? Well, we think so. Initially, it seemed as if we were going to get more info at this past December’s PSX, but their plans seemed to change last minute. We’re hoping that just gives more credence to the thought that we’ll hear more at E3. There’s also been very sparse details about the plot, but we do know a couple of things. First, Insomniac Games has said that this will not be an origin story, and that the dev is working closely with Marvel on this title. For those who’ve enjoyed superhero games in the past, this gives us a lot of hope. Mainly, because it makes us think that this could have a great narrative with Marvel at the helm. We also know that the story in this game will have no tie-in to the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie.

One of the main questions on gamers’ minds about this title, though, is who the villain/antagonist will be. Well, in another apparent slip-up, a synopsis for the game made a brief appearance on IMDb, and told us a bit about the plot. The synopsis has since been removed, but as we all know, the internet never forgets. The full description read as follows:

“Spider-Man must fight the terrifying foe Green Goblin as he contends with his usual life of being a married man with a daughter. But when the Goblin hatches a sinister plan, can Spidey save his family and himself?”

Let’s take a look at this for a moment. If this is an accurate synopsis, then we’ll probably see a more mature Peter Parker, and may tie in to the comics run in which he and MJ have a daughter named Annie. Granted, this is speculation, and Insomniac Games was quick to tell fans that they should “wait for the real deal”. Now, the IMDb page does still give the release as being in 2017, so that probably indicates that we’re going to be getting more info soon.

Finally, we’re also being given a new(ish) look for Spidey. We’re still getting the classic red & blue motif of the highly-loved original outfit, but it’s got a few tweaks to it. We’re seeing the classic logo on the front being tweaked, and looking more reminiscent of the large white logo on the front of the black symbiote costume (which ultimately became Venom). It’s an interesting twist, and (along with the grayish accents on the gloves) gives more of an updated feel to the outfit.

Wrapping all of this up, it looks like gamers could be in store for something pretty amazing when this game’s details are finally fleshed out and announced to the public. Whether we’ll get a big reveal at E3 is yet to be determined, but we’re definitely keeping our eyes on the news coming out of Marvel and Insomniac Games. Fingers crossed that this iteration of Spidey’s story will be a great one, and that it will be as fun to play as the current videos lead us to believe.
