As you are reading this, Daylight Savings Time has just kicked in and the cherry blossoms are about to bloom. This means we are that much closer to the spring season for anime.
We know one of the biggest shows that many are waiting for has to be season three of My Hero Academia, but below, we are going to take a look at some other picks that we are looking for, some big titles, some not so big titles.
Dances with the Dragons
Plot: Gayus and the beautiful but cruel sword-wielder Gigina are “special equationists,” individuals that manipulate the equations that govern world’s laws thus allowing fantastic and deadly results. These two bounty hunters are caught up in a battle with dragons in the city of Eridana and in the intrigue of great nations.
My Thoughts: Bounty hunters, magic and dragons, what can go wrong? The trailer looks kinetic and action packed, so I am hoping that there is a good story to go along with it.
Premiers: April 5th, 2018
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online
Plot: Karen Kohiruimaki is a 183-centimeter-tall (6-foot-tall) college student who’s insecure her height, and is bad at dealing with people in the real world. She enters the world of Gun Gale Online with her avatar, Llenn, who is less than 150 centimeters (5 feet) tall and wears all pink. She meets a beautiful, brown-skinned female player who goes by Pitohui. They hit it off, but one day Pitohui pressures her to participate in “Squad Jam,” a team Battle Royale variation of the Bullet of Bullets tournament.
My Thoughts: It looks like we are taking a break from Asuna and Kirito to focus on other characters and gaming. One of the things I have enjoyed about this series is the effect of gaming and how who we are in real life changes once we are taken away to virtual worlds. Let’s see what this spin off has in store for us!
Premiers: April 7th, 2018
Plot: In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush on the wild frontier of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it. Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck—and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa—to survive.
My thoughts: Something just a little different! A big war, a treasure hunt with a war vet and a bad ass girl to boot! I am looking forward to this adventurous tale of survival!
Premiers: April 9th, 2018
Tokyo Ghoul: re
Plot: About 2 years have gone by since the raid on Anteiku by the CCG and Tokyo is still dealing with it’s unwanted problem of ghouls. The ghouls have been more cautious in their actions as the influence of the CCG becomes more dominant. In the wake of that dominance, as task force known as the Quinx Squad (Quinx for short) provides the CCG with the push they needed to let the ghouls know who is boss. Quinx is a unit of humans who underwent surgery to utilize ghoul powers or weapons to eliminate ghouls. The leader of the group is Haise Sasaki, who is half human and half ghoul. There is more to this young man than meets the eye as memories of his past start to come to the surface.
My thoughts: I’m excited for this! This season is the 3rd installment to the Tokyo Ghoul franchise and in my opinion, it’s well needed for the anime. Season 2 for me was a MEGA FLOP, so hopefully this season makes up for it. A lot of those I know who follow TG are deep into the manga and have told me to just get into the books, but I’m gonna give this season a shot. Hopefully, I’ll be wow’d unlike last time…
Premiers: April 3rd, 2018
Mahou Shoujo Ore (Magical Girl Ore)
Plot: A 15 year old girl is in love with her best friend’s brother, who she has known since she was a kid. As she is living her best life trying to get her crush to notice her, a yakuza comes up to her and tells her that her mom used to be magical girl and he was the one who gave her the powers to do so. She shakes him off and goes off to school like normal. Then, her crush gets kidnapped by some evil force with bara men with squirrel heads so she goes back to the yakuza to make a contract with him to become a magical girl. The twist is instead of becoming a magical girl, she becomes a magical manly man! However, she is not alone in this. Her best friend, who also has feeling for her, makes a similar contract with the yakuza so she can help her beloved.
My thoughts: I. LOVE. THIS!!! Ever since I watched Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! and wrote a review on it last year, I’ve been DYING for more magical boy animes! Similar to Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!, this seems to be very lighthearted and ridiculous. It suckered me in with manly boys in cute lolita/magical girl outfits. It’s not the magical boy anime of my dreams, in which the guys are serious and not seen as “cross-dressers”, but it tickled me pink and I HAVE to see how it ends!
Premiers: April 2nd, 2018
Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Happy Kiss!
My thoughts: OMFG! I’M PUMPED! Okay, I know there isn’t a plot for this one but I have some serious guesses! This series is special to me because it’s the 4th installment to the Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu/ Cute High Earth Defense Club franchise. As stated in my last pick, I’ve seen Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! so I have a feeling where this is going. It’s going to be another magical boy anime (you see a theme here?) but instead of wearing magical girl clothing, I assume they will be wearing magical boy/Prince-like outfits. If it follows the theme of its predecessor, it’ll probably be a parody of the magical girl genre, so loaded with puns and jokes that take stabs at magical girls tropes such as cutesy catchphrases, poses, etc etc. Either way, I’m ALL THE HERE FOR IT and need to see it! Highly suggest you watch Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! (which is on Crunchyroll) to get an idea of where I’m going with this.
Premiers: April ??, 2018
Aggressive Retsuko (Aggretsuko)
Plot: Dealing with the mundane life of being a bullied office worker, Retsuko lets go of her troubles the only way she knows how: death metal karaoke.
My Thoughts: I’ma sucker for anything from the Hello Kitty universe in general so I will always pick up anything Sanrio is selling. This anime is going to hit a little close to home and I’m here for it 1000%. Dealing with the daily struggles of working in an office, it’s that same refreshing
Premieres: April 20th, 2018 on Netflix (& Rage)
Plot: One night, Nitta, a member of the yakuza was basking in his own greatness when a strange object fell on his head. Turns out that strange object was a strange box with a strange young girl named Hina. Though Hina has tremendous power which can come in handy for his yakuza business, he has to be careful cause they could be used on him! Whether he likes it or not, they can’t be suppressed or she can go berserk and destroy everything. After reluctantly taking her in, the series follows the story of Nitta and Hina’s strange life together.
My Thoughts: There’s nothing like a good supernatural anime to get the blood flowing. The art style is fun, but dramatic, which tells me that I’ll be worrying about characters going awry one minute, then rolling on the floor laughing the next. Hinamatsuri, also known as Girls’ Day, is celebrated on the second auspicious day out of five seasonal festivals adapted from the Chines calendar to now transfixed dates. Traditionally, it was also called the Peach Festival, but faded with calendar adjustments while still keeping the peach symbolism. With a title like that and a heaping dose of history loaded behind it, I hope that this adds another layer to the plot and ties in the origins of this special day dealing with purification as well as one of the mythical founders of Japan.
Premiers: April 6th, 2018
Persona 5 the Animation
Plot: Based off the game which they will most likely follow closely, a rebellious group of teenagers in Tokyo form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts to rebel against the corruption and slavery in society. The protagonist will be named as Ren Amamiya, so unfortunately, you won’t be able to name him as you follow the anime.
My Thoughts: I’m extremely excited to see this one come out. Though I haven’t had the time to play the game, this is a way where I can still support the franchise on my time. With some of my friends around me have played the game and gave me a glimpse into the world that is Persona 5, I believe I will enjoy it. I just hope there isn’t a lot of information out on the animation yet, but I do hope it goes into as much depth and layers that were riddled through the game.
Premieres: April 2018
