The SNES Classic Edition is Actually Coming!
On May 1 of this year, we here at PCU talked about the list of games we’d like to see on a SNES Classic Edition, which was rumored to be in production at the time. Well, Nintendo gamers, it’s time to rejoice, because we’ve gotten confirmation this morning that the rumored throwback console is now a reality!
Based on an announcement on Nintendo’s website, it looks like they WILL be releasing a SNES Classic Edition, and we’ll see it hit store shelves in the United States on September 29, 2017, retailing for $79.99 (USD). The console will be packages with two wired Super NES Classic controllers for “multiplayer gaming”. The standalone mini console will also come pre-packaged with 21 games (see the list below), including a lot of gamer favorites. The big surprise for this one? The SNES Classic Edition will also be the platform for the reveal of Star Fox 2, which was previously unreleased.
Super Mario World
Super Mario Kart
F-Zero
Super Metroid
Street Fighter II
Super Punch-Out
Castlevania IV
Donkey Kong Country
Mega Man X
Kirby Super Star
Final Fantasy III
Kirby’s Dream Course
Star Fox
Yoshi’s Island
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Secret of Mana
EarthBound
Super Ghouls N’ Ghosts
The Legend of Zelda – A Link to the Past
Now, with as difficult as it became to get our hands on the NES Classic Edition back in the fall of 2016 (due to issues with stock), let’s hope that Nintendo learned something from the buzz that they caused with that console’s release (and subsequent discontinuation in April). With luck, they’ll make this one more widely available in stores, and gamers won’t have to resort to paying exorbitant prices on sites like eBay in order to get this nostalgic console into our homes.
Currently, no retailer information has been released by Nintendo, but their website does mention that it’s “coming soon”.
Keep your eyes open, and get your thumbs ready, gamers. This looks like it’s going to be a fantastic release! Did Nintendo include one or more of your favorite titles in the upcoming console launch? Let us know your thoughts on the SNES Classic Edition down in the comments!
I bought the original Contra at PS store. My mother said she played that a lot in the 80’s, so I got curious and bought it…… haven’t played it yet.
