An Assassins Creed Series Coming to Netflix? Possibly.

Since its release back in December, the quality of the recent Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender has been a topic of debate for fans of the video game franchise & critics alike. The status quo seems to be that the movie was just…not very good. Well, in spite of that, now it appears that the folks who create the content for the Assassin’s Creed franchise aren’t stopping with just the movie.

On March 22nd, a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) was done with Aymar Azaizia, head of content for Assassins Creed. During the time that Mr. Azaizia was answering questions, one poster asked if there were any details that could be shared regarding the prospect for a TV series based on the AC universe & its stories of historical characters & secret societies.

The answer from Azaizia was simple: “Nope :p It’s like the movie guys, we will take our time, to get sure we deliver something we can be proud of, but if you wander if it’s on our plan… YES.” So it looks like we do, in fact, have confirmation of a small-screen series somewhere down the line – provided that negotiations have the desired outcome. This info, combined with the fact that Yves Guillemot (head of Ubisoft) confirmed that Ubisoft was in talks with Netflix to partner on the production of a series based on one of their franchises, gives fans some hope of redemption from the fallout of December’s movie.

With Assassin’s Creed currently being Ubisoft’s most recognizable brand, it would make sense for the gaming company to push forward on getting something like this out on Netflix. With the releases of shows like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and yes, even Iron Fist, Ubisoft could really capitalize on the streaming service’s embracing of nerddom with the addition of an AC television series.

A few questions arise, though: What would be the plot? Would Ubisoft go with a re-telling of the Desmond Miles story, or would they choose a new character? Would fans see new historical locations and eras? What historical figures would the showrunners include in the scripts? As a fan of the series since the first game, I would hope that a bit of everything is included. Following the original games would be amazing, but I think that the inclusion of some of the comic book characters and story arcs wouldn’t hurt. Those are less well-known than the games, but no less well-written. Characters like Charlotte de la Cruz and Arbaaz Mir are deep, engaging, and really deserve more time in the sun.

At this point, only time will tell, which way Ubisoft & Netflix take this, but we here at PCU will keep our fingers crossed, and hope really hard that Ubisoft does in fact take their time with this one in order to get it right.

What do you think about the prospect of a Netflix series based on Assassin’s Creed, dear readers? Are you excited about the concept, or would you rather Ubisoft just stick withe games? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below!
