A new trailer for Mass Effect: Andromeda hit the web yesterday with some new gameplay footage for us all to drool over.
So, what’ve we got? Our new ship, The Tempest, gets stranded on an unknown planet, where our hero, Pathfinder, must fight off robotic-looking monsters.
However, what might be even more interesting is what you see on the menu screens. Under the new “Profiles” option, we see the hero switch from a Soldier to an Engineer. These two classes were exclusive in the original trilogy. So now we have a class-hopping game, eh? All right, I’m listening.
You can see that the Infiltrator and Explorer classes are also lit up, but the other three are grayed out. Perhaps you need to unlock these classes as you go. This certainly offers more versatility. However, I also noticed that the Engineer had certain bonuses the Soldier did not, and vice-versa. Switch at your own risk, it seems.
The menu shots also let you see Pathfinder upgrading his skills. Some familiar names were on the list, like Overload, Energy Drain, and Incinerate, but there were some new ones as well. The skill chart flows similarly to Mass Effect 3, where higher levels give you one of two options.
Three options at a time appear under the “Loadout” section, which seems like the one-button quick commands from previous Mass Effect games.
Finally, we get to see all those skills in action. Flame-throwing, gun-blasting, electrical overloading, all the fun stuff of the ME franchise with cool additions like the ability to slide-dodge, leap greater distances, and even slow down time.
Then, at the very end of the video, as a creature dies, we get a sound effect that sounds eerily familiar. Possible connection to the Reapers?
We’re seeing a nice mix of familiar game mechanics and new touches. Yep, definitely getting pumped about this game.
Mass Effect: Andromeda releases on March 21, 2017.
