Unless you’ve not been paying attention, you’ll know that one of the games that we here at Pop Culture Uncovered are most looking forward to is Horizon Zero Dawn. PlayStation has been continuously whetting our appetites with production information & teaser trailers for the game since it was announced at 2015’s E3 conference.
Just last week, PlayStation & Guerrilla Games (the lead developer on Horizon Zero Dawn) debuted another trailer which showed off an amazingly expansive and beautifully detailed world. It also revealed some of the dangers that gamers will face, in the form of the gigantic dinosaur-like Machines as well as an unforgiving landscape. Now, after over a year of relative secrecy, we’re finally being given some solid information about the game’s protagonist: a young woman named Aloy. The development team talks about what has driven Aloy to delve into the secrets of her past, and subsequently the past of everyone else left on Earth. This information comes in the form of a production video released by the PlayStation EU YouTube channel, and we get a look at what drives Aloy to do what she does.
Guerrilla Games studio co-founder & Managing Director Hermen Hulst begins the video by telling us that one of Aloy’s motivations is finding out who her parents were. Game director Mathijs De Jonge also tells us that Aloy is shunned by most of her tribe, and that only a select few individuals will even interact with her. Right there, we get some exposition on our protagonist: she’s an orphan looking for her place in this world.
More insight into Aloy as a character gives us, by extension, more insight into the world of Horizon Zero Dawn as a whole. As a gamer, one of the greatest things I feel that has been said about this IP is Hermen Hulst describing the idea for, and subsequent creation of, Aloy: “We wanted somebody who was very curious, intelligent and takes in this wondrous world full of mystery to unravel. And she can be fierce. We didn’t want a Disney type princess.”
Even with all of this information, however, those of us who are awaiting this game with bated breath are still left with questions: Why is the human race set so far back? What is Aloy’s significance to this world? Why is she treated like a pariah? It looks like we’ll have to wait until the game is released for PlayStation on February 28th in the USA, and March 1st in the UK!
