The Fist and the Steel – the team of Ninjak and The Eternal Warrior – was first introduced in the pages of the mini-series Book of Death, and together they become Earth’s greatest protectors. This story is about their first meeting as a duo. Set in the distant future, The Eternal Warrior is having a meeting with much older Ninjak about an old foe. The duo then sets out together to stop the enemy’s plans. As the story progresses, we see the differences in approach as Ninjak is the finesse while The Eternal Warrior is a blunt instrument of destruction. As the team makes their way to defeat the enemy, the story ends with the revelation of a much larger force at work. Each issue of Ninjak has a flashback story, and this issue the story takes place in the modern day right after the events of the last story arc.
Matt Kindt’s writing is simply superb, as he really shows how these opposing styles can be a cohesive unit together. The reader can see how intimately Matt understands both these characters – from their dialogues with others to the way he plans out their battle sequences – it truly is phenomenal work. Khari Evans’s artwork really is outstanding, whether it’s a scene of complete carnage or just a majestic pose. His art truly is a site to behold and works perfectly in conjunction with Matt’s story. Andres Guinaldo’s (the artist on the flashback story) work fits perfectly with the comic. His style actually works in together with Khari’s so that neither overshadows the other. They actually work in unison to showcase these stories taking place in two different times in Ninjak’s life.
If you haven’t read an issue of Ninjak, this is the perfect jump-on point for new readers. It may be a much older Ninjak, yet he is true to the main characteristics of the hero. Also for the new readers, the flashback tale gives the info needed in order to stay with the series permanently.
I loved this book, so I give Ninjak #18 4 Shurikens out of 5! What is your favorite Valiant series? Let us know in the comments below. For more Valiant news and reviews, stay with Pop Culture Uncovered.
