On Darkwater Island, veteran & private investigator Edward Pierce begins an investigation into the death of a young artist – unaware that his investigation will soon take him into the horrifying Lovecraftian world of Cthulu, the Great Dreamer. This is the premise of the upcoming Call of Cthulu, which is an adaptation of the long-running tabletop RPG by Chaosium.
The game is being developed by Cyanide Studio, using Unreal Engine 4. Featuring stealth mechanics, psychological horror aspects, and a foreboding atmosphere; Call of Cthulu takes place in Boston, MA, during the 1920s. Players will assume the role of Edward Pierce, while he delves into the death of the acclaimed artist, Sarah Hawkins. Pierce will slowly uncover the mystery that surrounds Darkwater Island itself, and come face-to-face with the notion that The Great Dreamer, Cthulu, is preparing for its awakening.
The screenshots that were just released from the developer give a good look at the creepy & nearly-maddening atmosphere that fans of the Cthulu mythos have come to expect from the stories of The Old Ones, and while there have been several games over the years which have been based on the Cthulu stories (Alan Wake, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, etc), none so far have actually featured the seminal character of Cthulu itself.
Call of Cthulhu will release in 2017 on consoles and PC, and if the developers stick true to Lovecraft’s themes, this could be a terrifyingly good time!
