Darwyn Cooke Being Treated for “Aggressive” Cancer

Darwyn Cooke, the Eisner award-winning cartoonist behind DC: The New Frontier and the graphic novel adaptations of Richard Stark’s Parker series published by IDW, is receiving palliative care for cancer.  The news was released this morning in a post titled “F*ck Cancer” where Marsha Cooke, Darwyn’s wife, wrote:

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce Darwyn is now receiving palliative care following a bout with aggressive cancer. His brother Dennis and I, along with our families appreciate the outpouring of support we have received. We ask for privacy as we go through this very difficult time. Palliative care for cancer is not a death sentence, but indicates that Mr. Cooke would be receiving treatment for not just the symptoms of cancer but to help with his quality of life.

Comixology just announced a 50% off sale on all Darwyn Cooke works on their digital platform, which can not only introduce people to his work but also provide an economical boost to Mr. Cooke.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with Mr. Cooke and his family while he battles this disease.

We would also like to use this as an opportunity to remind readers that many comic creators are self-employed, and that their health benefits are often very expensive — with many creators being uninsured.  The Hero Initiative is a worthwhile organization that helps to provide a safety net for comic creators for instances just like this.
