Comic Books: A Beginners Guide

Want to get into the comic book world and don’t know how? Check out the beginners guide!

Have you ever wanted to know more about the universe your favorite heroes come from?

Maybe you have always wanted to be that person in your social group that read the comic books and knows when something is “right or wrong?”

Perhaps you have taken a trip to your local comic book shop, stepped foot into it, and then realized you don’t even know where to begin?

Never fear! YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

As the two comic book giants Marvel and DC continue their epic battle on the cinematic big screen, there is a growing interest in becoming part of the infamous comic book community. The readership is continuously growing as more lesser known characters are coming to life either through our television sets or in movie theaters. Naturally we become attached to these characters, and their struggles. Of course we want to know more about their lives, why they think the way they do, and why they make the decisions that they make. The age old motto “The book is better than the movie” rings true even in the comics. If you are one of those people that is ready to dive into the world of comic books, here are some helpful hints to get started!

1. Narrow it down!
Try to determine for yourself what character or universe you would like to know more about. If you aren’t even sure of that, determine a genre that you are interested in. Do you enjoy romance? Comedy? Action? Is there maybe a childhood show you really enjoyed? Maybe you just want to be immersed with something off the wall?

2. Research surrounding comic book shops!
Once you have found out what type of comics you are most interested in, research your surrounding area for a comic book shop. Consider using Yelp! or other review pages to find the best fit for you. If you are from a small town, I would recommend checking out a town favorite as your first choice.

3. Be Brave!
Unfortunately we live in a society where judgement of others runs rampant, and some consider being called a “nerd” or “weird” as an insult. Please know that from personal experience, no one will bat an eye once you enter a comic book shop. Yes, ladies – geekdom among women is happily accepted by most, if not all, shop owners. My small town shop owner has comic knowledgeable female employees, nieces, and friends. I’ve never felt awkward when entering his store that is located in a small, deep southern town in North East Tennessee. Take the time to get to know your shop owner, that way he/she will be capable of helping you find something new to check out when you aren’t sure what to try next.

4. Ask for help!
Having a tough time finding what you are looking for? Not even sure if you are looking in the right section? Don’t be nervous about asking for help. Explain your situation to the shop keeper, whether you are searching for a specific title or are in need of suggestions. I’ve found that asking for suggestions has been my number #1 way of finding some of my now favorite comics!

5. Be Open Minded!
The only constant thing in life is change, so take a deep breath and try something out of your comfort zone. Maybe you’ll surprise yourself. 😉

Still unsure about all this? Here are my top 5 comic book series that I am currently reading or have thoroughly enjoyed.

  1. Herobear and The Kid created, written, and illustrated by Mike Kunkel,  published by Kaboom! Studios.

After Tyler’s grandfather passes away, he inherits an old stuffed bear and a broken pocket watch. Things aren’t always what they seem, especially when Tyler finds out how to unlock the amazing power of his stuffed toy!

       2. Gotham Academy written by Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher. Illustrated by Karl  Kerschel and published by DC Comics.

The series takes place in the DC Batman Universe and follows Olive Silverlock, and her friends as they uncover the mysteries of Gotham Academy.

       3. My Little Pony written by Ted Anderson, Katie Cook, Heather Nuhfer, Jeremy Whitley, Christina Rice, and Thom Zahler. Illustrated by Andy Price, Amy Mebberson, Brenda Hickey, Agnes Garbowska, Jay P. Fosgitt and Tony Fleecs. Published by IDW.

Following the huge success of the television show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, IDW comics has decided to bring the Mane 6 to the comic book world where many more tales are told of all of our favorite ponies.

      4. Paper Girls written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson. Published by Image Comics.

A group of Paper Girls on Halloween morning in 1988 find themselves in what seems to be the beginning of an apocalypse that suggests aliens and time travel.

      5. Rat Queens written by Kurtis J. Wiebe, illustrated by Roc Upchurch, Stjepan Sejic, Tess Fowler and Tamra Bonvillain and published by Image Comics/Shadowline.

Meant for mature audiences, a band of foul mouthed lady warriors are out to accomplish their quests and get into some deep trouble while they are it. Imagine The Lord of the Rings crossing over with Bridesmaids, and you’ll get the picture.
