Movie review: Keanu
Jordan Peele (Kell) and Keegan-Michael Key (Clarence) wrapped up their highly successful television show ‘Key and Peele” and are diving into the big screen with this first feature film together.
The comedy duo has taken their “white sounding black guys” skit and have spoofed your typical romantic action buddy film by making the love interest a kitten named Keanu.

As the story goes, Kell’s girl dumps him, leaving him a broken man. His only reason for living besides recreational smoking is finding Keanu.
This seems like the answer to his prayers but Keanu’s last forever home wants him back and at any cost. A home invasion of a drug dealer with the wrong address puts Keanu back into that thug life. Heartbroken again, Kell enlists the help of his corporate team building cousin, Clarence to get him back.
Over the course of the weekend the cousins are able to find Keanu and convince the low-level kingpin that they are in fact two of the most feared enforcers in the game, “The Allentown Boys” whom are also played by Key and Peele. I did enjoy the action sequence which balanced excitement with implausible cuteness. But they should have spent more money on the Allentown Boy’s makeup. They looked like they were dredge in oil.
Liam Neesom is mentioned a few times. Perhaps they are hinting to “Taken” and “Run all Night”. Nia Long plays Clarence’s loving but maybe a little too trusting wife. Luis Guzman plays Keanu’s Uncle Bacon. Bacon wants revenge on the Allentown Boys and to bring Keanu back to the family. The band of not so intimidating thugs running drugs for Cheddar (Method Man) aren’t the best actors but paired with Key and Peele it’s still very funny.
This movie works. Its funny without being over the top. I’m not a cat person but even I wanted to take Keanu home with me.
Also if you are an 80s music fan you will be singing along to the sound track.
I’m giving Keanu 4 paws up outof 5..
