Review Brew: N.K. Jemisin
I first learned of N. K. Jemisin by reading Far Sector, one of the few comics that DC Comics has put out in the past few years that I was genuinely intrigued by: the newest Earth Green Lantern, Sojourner ‘Jo’ Mullien, like Kyle Rayner before her, gets a special ring. One that works a bit differently than the others and is sent to patrol the City Enduring, where no one has died in millennia…until someone does.
This story, a combination of noir crime thriller, afro-futurism and pop culture, is an intriguing look at taking the Vulcan-like idea of suppressing emotions to its natural conclusion and the fallout when those emotions are suddenly let loose.
However, that was just the tip of the iceberg of N.K. Jemison’s work and to be honest I feel like I should’ve known about her sooner. From sprawling epics like The Dreamblood Omnibus to her short fiction essays, How Long ‘Til Black Future Month, Jemisin is a writer to watch. Check out her work here.
