Left Alive’s Sweet Game Play Trai-ahhh… Wait a Minute
SquareEnix released a new trailer for Left Alive the other day, and I gotta admit it looks like it will be a cool game. The heavy hitters of mech related combat games are combining to form Devastator on this title. So far the in the line-up we have:
- Yoji Shinkawa lending his artistic talent to the project. For those not in the know, he’s the guy responsible for designing steel murder machines (plus the characters and environments) in the Metal Gear and Zone of the Enders series.
- Takayuki Yanasethe, the mech designer for Ghost in a Shell: Arise, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and Xenoblade Chronicles X.
- The cherry on top is that Toshifumi Nabeshima will be directing the game, and considering he’s been directing the Armored Core series since 1997, it’s safe to say this title is in good hands.
The interwebz is blowing up about this title, so I scooted myself over to the game’s official webpage to get more of the low-down on it. To my surprise, the site was surprisingly bare, with just the teaser trailer and a statement that it’s a “survival action shooter” which will be set in a “dark and gritty world”. The site also name-dropped the people who signed on to the project (making my job crazy easy), and promised a 2018 release date. Okay, that’s not a lot to go on and I’m left with a few basic questions like: Will I get to pilot a giant robot? What exactly is a survival action shooter? No, seriously: will I get to pilot a giant robot, or what? You keep showing me giant robots! Needing a bit more to go on, I re-watched the trailer and caught the fine print around the 30-second mark.
Yuuuuuup, not actual game play footage. Oh SquareEnix…you got me again, ya little rascal. As much as I hate to be the guy who craps on all the coats at a party, all we have are a couple of pretty concept videos and the names of those who are working on the project. We’re not really given any real idea of what the game will actually be about. The creative team definitely does have an idea that looks like it could be really neat, and top-tier people on the project. However, until they give us a little more meat to sink our teeth into, I can only look forward to this one with cautious optimism. But, we can probably count on this title getting released, given SquareEnix’s track record. They would never waste time and money on a sure win, then leave the fans dangling.
Kinda like when they released the next-gen remake of Final Fantasy Sev-aaahhhhh, well; fingers crossed anyway.
Mildly irrelevant, but: Kurtis Bolk, if I find your style delightfully cheeky and informative and wish to have an active update of when you decide to add more quality content to the internet, where might I go to find such news of updates? Have ye olde Twitter?

Thank you for such high praise. One may have to use the term “quality” loosely when appraising my content. Though, I’m glad there are people who find it enjoyable. As luck would have it, I hath recently aquired thy Ye Olde Twitter. It’s still fresh out the oven, but I plan to share links to future articles and other writings there. http://www.twitter.com/KurtisBolk
