Can ‘Tomb Raider’ Save Video Game Movies?

On Tuesday the first trailer for the brand new Tomb Raider film starring Alicia Vikander and Walton Goggins dropped giving fans a sense of what they will see in March of next year. Now while myself and many other video game fans have been burned in the past by terrible film adaptations of some of our favorite games, I will say that I am cautious but optimistic about the upcoming film. In no way am I saying that every video game movie has been terrible, in fact I really enjoyed the WarCraft film from last year (it’s a guilty pleasure of mine to watch it). We were also given the Assassin’s Creed film in December of last year as well and while I did not hate it, I also didn’t really enjoy it that much.

Enter Tomb Raider which is a reboot of the franchise from the early 2000’s that encompassed two films both of which starred Angelina Jolie. This is where I start to get cautious about this movie. If this wasn’t an already existing film franchise I would be a little more optimistic and not as cautious because let’s face it, this movie could be worse than the two previous films. I love that they are using the 2013 reboot of the game as the inspiration for this film but then again with the trailer I am not getting the whole feeling of Lara being out of her element like I did when playing the game. The dire feeling of survival and self preservation seems like its gone in the film.

Now I know that I am just speculating on what I have seen in the trailer but as a fan and film goer I have been burned way too much in the past (Remember Street Fighter?). I’m not saying that this movie doesn’t have the potential to be great, it does have Alicia Vikander and Walton Goggins and we know that they can bring it when it comes to acting. I guess I just don’t want this film to be bad. All I want is a good film adaptation of a game that I really enjoyed playing.

  1. I have always enjoyed playing Tomb Raider ( I have no opinion on Jolie’s Lara Craft ). I hope this movie will have more action scenes , like in the games.
