Are You Ready to Hunt Walkers in Augmented Reality?

Those of you who’ve followed us for a while know that I am not the biggest fan of Pokémon. The same can be said for its augmented reality (AR) game, Pokémon GO!. Still, the idea of AR has been intriguing and exciting to me, so I had hoped that some other game companies would take up the challenge and do something with a different IP. For a while, however, it looked like that might not happen.

If you’re like me, then listen up. It looks like our wish is now being granted, and in a very cool way!

Finnish developer Next Games is now partnering with AMC, and they’ll be bringing us what could be the next blockbuster AR game to mobile platforms. Enter, The Walking Dead: Our World.

There’s even been a pretty cool trailer released by AMC. This kind of thing just whets our zombie-killing appetites, and makes the lack of a formal release date a little more frustrating.

Next Games gives a pretty good description of the game on their website:

The Walking Dead: Our World, first-of-a-kind location based augmented reality mobile game will hit Apple App Store and Google Play soon. Fight walkers on the streets, in the park, on your sofa, wherever and whenever you feel like it. You don’t need to face the apocalypse alone; as of now, at least three of your favorite characters from AMC’s The Walking Dead will fight by your side.”

Yep. You read that right. It appears that some characters from the hit TV show to help us out in-game, too! Rick, Michonne, and yes…even Daryl will appear as helpers in the game in order to keep us from getting our faces eaten (thank goodness it’s not Shane, right?).

So, how will The Walking Dead: Our World do in the face of its Pokémon GO! competition? Well, that might not even be anything to be concerned about. The Walking Dead: Our World is clearly marketed to an older audience, and one who enjoys horror games, zombies, and lots of action. Pokémon GO! is more of a relaxed style of AR game, with a younger audience in mind.

This is DEFINITELY one mobile title on which I’ll be keeping a close eye, dear readers. I highly recommend you do as well. You never know when walker-hunting skills will come in handy…
