More Mega Man news out of Hollywood, friends! The Hollywood Reporter and Variety broke the news on July 19th that a Mega Man movie is now in production. In talks to write and direct the film, are the team of Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost (Paranormal Activity 3, Catfish, Nerve), with former Heroes star Masi Oka in line to produce the big screen adaptation of the classic video game.
Since the game was released back in 1987, Mega Man has given rise to over 100 console and mobile games over the years. Known for a large roster of characters, memorable soundtrack, and deep lore, Mega Man has managed to garner a whole lot of fans, and stay relevant for almost 4 decades.
As an android assistant created by Dr. Light, Mega Man was later redesigned for combat when the good doctor’s assistant-turned-adversary, Dr. Wily, reprogrammed the other androids of Light’s creation for his own evil purposes. With its huge variation of bosses throughout the series, villains like Bomb Ma, Oil Man, and Fire Man have become fan favorites.
Since the Mega Man franchise took off, the character has also appeared along the likes of Ryu and Iron Man in the Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games, starred in his own animated series (another of which is set to arrive next year), and even made appearances in Nintendo’s seminal Super Smash Bros. games.
Joost and Schulman are said to be in final negotiations for writing & directing the film, which will be carried by Fox and Chernin Entertainment – the latter of which will be producing alongside Masi Oka. No word yet on whether it will be CGI or live-action, but either way, a Mega Man movie sounds like a great idea to us!
