For the first time in quite awhile, there’s actual news about Kingdom Hearts III and it is wonderful. While what we know about the game as a whole is a bit opaque in some respects, however this trailer gives a very detailed look at one of the worlds that I’ve personally been excited about: Toy Story. The trailer gives us a pretty thorough look with Sora and the gang landing in Andy’s bedroom and in what’s a first for the series: two guest party members Woody and Buzz Lightyear teaming up with them to fight the Heartless and meeting Young Xehanort (from 3DS RPG/pet simulator: Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance) once more who hints at what he wants for the True Organization.
The trailer also gives a possible glimpse of the return of Twilight Town in a fight with Neoshadows and Dusks, both fights also give a great glimpse of KHIII’s upgraded combat system which bears more than a passing resemblance to Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep’s transformation-based combat system. While Kingdom Hearts has always had a very intricate system for an ostensibly kid friendly series and it looks more gorgeous than ever on current gen machines.
The best part of all this is though is that Kingdom Hearts III finally has a release date. 2018. While a specific window has been nice, the faint nudge towards the idea of a release date has always been (for me anyway) the defining feature in watching this game. So it’s nice to finally have some final movement in ending the story of a series that will have began sixteen (!!!) years ago. I don’t know about you all, but I’m excited to see all this go down.
