TV Brew – Doctor Who S10 Review Part 2 – New Directions?

Everything old is new again…

In anticipation of the announcement of the next Doctor we look at the show’s future.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Slewo
So, what do you guys think of recasting the First Doctor?

Paul
Well, they’re not recasting in the strictest sense, he played the role in the making of Doctor Who movie the BBC did for the 50th

Slewo
I’m aware, still, this isn’t a small cameo. It’s an entire episode. I’m cool with it since Capaldi himself is also the first Doctor. I’m just curious if either of you are in the sacrilege crowd.

Belle
I don’t care to be honest, it’s far from the biggest issue the show has going forward.

Paul
Like I said, the gimmick of Doctors crossing their own time stream is happening far too often for my taste. The casting isn’t where my issue lies.

Slewo
I mean there was the 50th anniversary and there’s now. It’s not too often and in both cases there’s a specific reason.

Paul
Too often for me.

Slewo
I’m willing to give it a chance, especially since we never saw how Capaldi saved Gallifrey. His first story is his last, and his last story was his first ending. It’s poetry. After that it’s finished for awhile I presume. I doubt Chibnall is gonna wanna define his Doctor against someone else. I kind of like that Moffat buried Capaldi’s final adventure in one second of the 50th anniversary: basically both first Doctors got done in by Cybermen.

It makes sense, 12 finally found clarity and peace after losing two women he loved, his friends and standing in Gallifrey’s ruins. Why would he want to lose that again? So being faced with his first incarnation, he can’t tell him: don’t regenerate, because if he does he denies his own existence.

Paul
I’m kind of hoping the new Doc is companion-less for the entire season

Slewo
As Missy put it: exposition, someone needs to ask the questions. Then again I suppose he could just use his TARDIS mind palace with Chibnall writing on chalkboard.

Belle
I have to agree with Paul, no companions for a season might be what this show needs to keep me around and convince me it can be better, regardless of who they cast as the next Doctor. My mom made a very good point about the show and how it’s been since its revival: it has been telling us for some time what it is. The Women/POC/LGBTQ thing didn’t start with Moffat it started with Davies. It’s one of the reasons I don’t think Chibnall being in charge is going to change anything.

Slewo
I’ve said that before. Believe me, I wish I could ignore it, but Davies is guilty of it too. It just happens that he was able to paper it over by not treating all companions as exposition cue cards/love interests exclusively.

Paul
Davies was the culprit but his stories were so frelling good though.

Belle
My mom has been watching DW on and off since she was sixteen so her perspective is really interesting to me. She pointed out that this whole one companion per Doctor or companions infatuated with the Doctor started with the new era as well.

Slewo
Yup, the Doctor was mostly asexual because of content standards at the time. Davies was the one who made the Doctor a love interest and Moffat drilled it as much as he could once he took over. On top of that Davies and Moffat wasted Martha.

Belle
Also, the companions back in the day often called the Doctor on his shite, they were a team and half the time they were saving him.

Slewo
That’s what happens when the fans take over the asylum. The Doctor used to be a feeble old man who got them into trouble. Not that I don’t like the Doctor as a godlike figure, but you’re not wrong. There’s a gulf between say Tom Baker and now.

Belle
This weird dependence/sexual shite started with the new era, so how on earth can Chibnall change that? I like that the Doctor evolved with each incarnation, becoming more competent as he became more confident, but he wasn’t god and he wasn’t treated as such by his companions. Bill and Nardole brought back a lot of that old school companion vibe of calling him on the carpet for his bs and look what happened.

Slewo
I mean looking at Broadchurch and his willingness to take a completely clean break from Moffat? I think he can do it. The question is how much of that is the culture baked into the show?

Belle
Exactly, and it kills me because each of the new companions I initially liked but every white female one stayed on way too long and had weird ass sexual undercurrents.

Slewo
Undercurrents? Amy tried to seduce the Doctor on her wedding night. Or when she insisted it’s her wedding and the Doctor and Rory are both her guys. Like, wut?
Clara, at least, had the benefit of knowing the Doctor better than anyone else. Thank goodness for Capaldi course correcting the sexual thing with them.

Belle
Capaldi insisted on the course correction which, again, makes me terrified about Chibnall and the culture of the show in general.

Slewo
He did?

Belle
Capaldi found the entire idea of a romance between Clara and The Doctor appalling.

Slewo
I guess that explains why there was more nuance than usual. That’s why I suspect he wasn’t responsible for last season’s best stuff. It figures someone else would reign him in and I do think it worked because the understated love worked way better than Smith getting it on in the snow.

Paul
There was a definite tone shift last season from: “the girl who waited” “my impossible girl” Never woman. Always girl: little, needs to be taken care of, insignificant. This is why I was loving Bill. So much for that.

Belle
The only hope I have going forward is that they did pull the assgrab where Bill was concerned and Chibnall’s work on previous shows. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if it’s the writers or the show itself.

Slewo
I’m looking forward to what’s next though. Thankfully it’s easier to trust Chibnall’s work between being at the helm of the early seasons of Torchwood and the glory of television that is Broadchurch. And if the current casting rumors are true along with the proposed format change: we may he having the most sweeping change to the show since Christopher Eccleston was cast as the Doctor. Hope springs forth.
