What inspired you to start cosplaying? A cosplayer named Krissy Victory inspired me to cosplay. When I first started out I honestly didn’t think cosplay was for everyone. I would always think that “I’m too chubby”, “I don’t look like this character” and, “I’m not a model so I shouldn’t take pictures.” However one day in a convention chat I met her and she would post pictures and post about the things I was insecure about. Not only was she a black cosplayer, but she wasn’t taking no racist sh*t about her cosplay. Initially I fell in love with the way she handled the negativity that came her way and it’s pushed me passed a lot of anxiety barriers that sit between cosplay and me.

What do you do when you’re not cosplaying? When I’m not working at part/full time jobs, I am mainly playing video games, drawing, writing stories and reading manga. These are my main daily hobbies at the moment until I return to college to pursue my degree in Asian studies and hospitality management.

Which costumes have provided the biggest challenge and rewards so far, and why? I would have to say that working on my 3rd cosplay, Weiss Schnee, was the biggest challenge. This cosplay was my very first completed costumed and it included a corset, a jacket, skirt and boot covers. I was completely self taught so my costume was made based off of sight. So it was very detailed but the quality was 2 out of 5. I had trouble adding the grommets , making boot covers and dyeing the fabric to the right color. I really thought the whole costume would be a bust, until I wore it and did a photo shoot. By the time I finished up the photo shoot I was sure the costume was garbage. Not only did I lose my ponytail during the shoot but my corset strap snapped off. I was so convinced that the photo shoot was beyond ruined yet I received such great feedback from the cosplay community and even inspired others POCs to cosplay as well.

What is the best advice you would give someone new to cosplaying? It’s okay to cosplay what/whoever you want as long as you make the cosplay your own. You own that cosplay as if you created it. Be proud of your creations and your body. Let your creativity run amok in the cosplay community.

What is one thing the cosplaying community can do better when it comes to dealing with each other? I wish for everyone to be more understanding about about the issues in the cosplay community.
