Ah, Mega Man. Remember the rage-inducing levels, the boss fights that gave us premature high blood pressure, and the tears we shed just trying to traverse the 8-bit platforming? Good times.
Now, it seems that we’ll be able to experience that nostalgia all over again, and anywhere we go, since Capcom is set to release the first six games in the Mega Man franchise for mobile devices. Each of the games will be released on both iOS and Android devices in January 2017, and will be priced at a modest $1.99 each.
From the information that Capcom has released, it appears that all six games will be direct ports of the originals. Per Capcom’s announcement, “each game has been optimized for the mobile devices with adjustments to game speed”. However, there’s no mention of any other changes, so we’ll have to see what they bring to the table. The one thing that has some of us concerned, however, is the fact that these will be released for touchscreen devices. The Mega Man games always relied on sharp reflexes and pretty precise timing, which may or may not translate well from physical inputs to a touchscreen. Can the games really do well with such a change? Again, we’ll have to wait and see in January.
Bear in mind, dear readers, that this is not the titular blue-suited hero’s first foray on to mobile platforms. Capcom did release a port for Mega Man II back in 2010 in the iOS App Store, and then Mega Man X was also ported over in 2012. The reviews for the mobile versions of those games were positive on average, with the more negative comments about them being directed at the actual controls for the games. Therefore, it would be a good idea to check out some of the smartphone-compatible game controls if you are at all excited about Mega Man coming to mobile devices again.
Currently, there is no set release date for the games, nor has there been mention of any type of bundle pricing (if you want to get all of them at once). However, if you want to receive email updates for the games, Capcom is providing that opportunity with a pre-registration.
