‘Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders’ is a fun throwback to the 60s!

Those of us who are old enough to remember watching re-runs of the 1966-1968 Batman TV series are about to get a *BIFF!* and a *POW!* of nostalgia right in the face.

Warner Bros Entertainment has teamed up with DC Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar to bring us Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders! The trailer for this direct to video movie looks incredible, and brings back a lot of great memories of sitting in our parents’ living rooms, munching on cereal, and watching the bad guys get their butts kicked. Rumor has it that the film will be feature-length, too!

It really feels like the animators got detail oriented in their work for this project. They brought back the original TV series looks for the characters, like Cesar Romero’s wide-grinned Joker, Burgess Meredith’s monocled and squawking Penguin, and Julie Newmar’s flowing-haired Catwoman. They also included awesome details such as the original Lincoln Futura concept car that served as the Batmobile, and the white “eyebrows” on Batman’s cowl (yes, they were silly, but they were part of the show).

One of the best things about this, though? The little things. First, there’s the puns – both visual & spoken, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders looks to have them in spades. I mean, C’MON! The dynamic duo, strapped to a TV dinner tray, being fed into a giant oven that actually says “Giant Oven”? That’s the best! Then, there’s the often made fun of onomatopoeia flashes across the screen during the fight scenes. While kids these days would probably not appreciate them, those of us who remember the original series always looked forward to mimicking them while pantomiming the fight scenes on our TV screens (admit it…you did). Finally, there’s that iconic theme. Walk up to almost anyone, start singing, “Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na ” and they’re pretty much guaranteed to respond with “BATMAN!”

I certainly know what I’ll be doing when Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders comes out. The film is slated for digital release on October 11, 2016 and on Blu-Ray November 1, 2016.
