RiRi Williams Assumes a New Codename
Last month, we brought you the news of the internet backlash following the announcement of RiRi Williams taking up the mantle of The Invincible Iron Man. Well, early this morning, Wired announced that Ms. Williams would take a new moniker for her hero persona: that of IronHeart.
Iron Man series writer & Riri Williams’ creator, Brian Michael Bendis, said in a statement that “’Iron Woman’ seemed old fashioned to some, ‘Iron Maiden’ looked like a legal nightmare. And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole. Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related. When people see her story, you’ll be amazed at how simple and brilliant Joe’s suggestion was.”
RiRi Williams was first introduced in “Invincible Iron Man” #7, as a 15 year-old MIT student. Miss Williams challenged herself to create & build her own set of armor, modeled after (and using A.I. based upon the personality of) Tony Stark. As she had been using equipment & materials which she had stolen from the college, the campus police paid her a visit. This prompted her to don the armor for the first time, and take flight. While getting accustomed to her suit’s abilities, Riri intercepted some escaped inmates from the New Mexico State Penitentiary, and caught them by stopping the truck in which they were speeding away. In doing so, however, she damaged the integrity of her armor, causing her to have to return home to work on it. This heroic action caught the attention of Tony Stark, who paid her a visit & made the decision to endorse her want to become a super hero.
Tony Stark may play a role in Ironheart’s new series, but the details of that are being kept under wraps by Bendis and series editor Tom Breevort. In the Wired exclusive this morning, all Mr. Breevort would reveal about Stark was, “Regardless of where he might be physically, he’ll be soaring along with her spiritually.”

The Wired article also showed the two (that’s right, 2) covers for the new series. The first, by series regular Stefano Caselli, and a STEAM variant by Mike McKone (also of DC comics). Ms. Williams will begin her series in “Invincible Iron Man” #1 this November.
