Rogue One Comic Disappears Like So Many Alderaans
“We’ve come out of hyperspace into a meteor shower. Some kind of asteroid collision. It’s not on any of our charts. Our position is correct, only…no Rogue One comic.”
“What do you mean? Where is it?”
“That’s what I’m trying to tell you, kid. It’s been totally blown away.”
Several comic book news sites are reporting that Marvel’s planned prequel comic to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been either delayed or cancelled. Amazon customers reportedly have had their pre-orders of the collected edition of the comics cancelled. Marvel has yet to comment on the disappearance of the series.
Readers are understandably disappointed: Marvel has had fairly consistent success with the Star Wars license since reclaiming it two years ago, with Star Wars and Darth Vader regularly making the top ten on Diamond’s monthly sales charts. Marvel’s Shattered Empire miniseries served as a minor lead-in to The Force Awakens which nicely coordinated with Disney Books and Del Rey in the broader “Journey to The Force Awakens” project. It appeared that Marvel would be repeating that type of project this fall, with the Rogue One prelude comic coinciding with Del Rey’s Catalyst novel which would both lead into the film.
At this point, we can only speculate where the Rogue One comic went. Bleeding Cool speculates that it could be emblematic of Marvel having problems coordinating with Disney and J.J. Abrams as it supposedly did with the C-3PO comic. Maybe Marvel had difficulty coordinating the Rogue One comic with Del Rey’s Catalyst story. Or maybe Marvel couldn’t get a creative team to finish the story on time.
Whatever the reason, between this (apparent) cancellation and the conclusion of the Darth Vader ongoing series, it’s potentially a tough time to be a Star Wars comic fan right now. At this point, we only have the monthly Star Wars and Poe Dameron comics to look forward to, along with the Han Solo miniseries and The Force Awakens comic adaption. Stay tuned for whether Rogue One resurfaces or if another series rises to take its place.
