Some of the most notable moms in geekdom

Mother’s Day is coming, did you remember to get her a gift for this coming Sunday?  You’ve got a few days left! This quick list is about some of the most notable mothers in all of geekdom.  Some are bad, some are good and some are a little in between. Bottom line is that without many of them, we wouldn’t have some of the characters we have now.   Let’s take a look at who made the list.

Talia Al Ghul

Claim to fame:   She has done what no other woman in the DC Universe has done.  Made Bruce Wayne her baby’s daddy.  She has done everything for Damien Wayne that she could but give him adequate social skills.  On top of that when she could do no more, she sent him off to live with daddy.  When she thought Bruce was doing an inadequate job of raising him, she cloned him and had him killed without blinking an eye. She could have at least paid some child support….oh wait.  Just goes to show that there is no pleasing Mother.

Leia Organa

Claim to fame:  In many ways, she is the strongest of the Skywalkers.  She resisted being probed by her father, (not like that you freaks!), weathered the destruction of her home planet, and kept her friends from being roasted alive by cannibal teddy bears.  Her brother, in retrospect got his hand chopped off by said daddy, attempted suicide by swan diving off of Cloud City and had to be saved by Leia.  Her lover and babydaddy got frozen in carbonite and she had to save his ass as well and then she choked the living crap out of a giant Hutt slug.  Now, her son, a real whiny piece of work, destroyed what her brother (the same whiny one who got his hand whacked off) was building because he was emulating their whiny grandfather.  Not to mention, he killed his daddy.  He is going to get the epic spanking of a lifetime should momma get hold of him.

Molly Weasley

Claim to fame:   In the Potterverse,  she is the mom that has done the best she could with what little she had.  She and her husband put 7 kids through school on hand me downs and a shoe string budget and all turned out mostly well.  Not only that, she was part of a secret organization attempting to bring down Voldemort and the Death Eaters.  Then came the Battle of Hogwarts; the Death Eaters, particularly Bellatrix Lestrange messed with the wrong mama bear.  Already losing one of her sons, when Bellatrix went after Ginny, Mama Weasley went in on that A**!  Molly showed that like the Wu-Tang Clan, she was nothing to eff with.

Ororo Munroe

Claim to fame:  Wait…you didn’t know Storm had a kid? If you figured that it was not the 616 Storm you get a pass.  But in an alternate timeline, Ororo and T’Challa (some even hint that it’s Wolverine’s child because of her feral behavior) had a daughter named Kymera.  Kymera came back in time to help the X-men stop the Future.   Although she and Storm don’t really get along, Kymera has respect for her mother especially seeing her being a strong leader and teacher especially to younger X-men like Jubilee, who also has become a mom.   Storm has come a long way in finding herself, stepping into the leadership role of the X-Men and in future stories, hopefully we can see more of that matronly side come out.

Daenerys Targaryen

Claim to fame: Out of almost all of the Game of Thrones, she is the one that started out with the least and mayhaps wind up with the most. She gets traded to Khal Drogo for 40,000 men. All she has of value are 3 dragon eggs which many say will not hatch.  She is despised by the Dothraki people, beaten and sexually abused by Drogo, somewhere along the line not only does she become their leader, but those eggs?  Well…they hatched after she walked INTO a fire. Beyond that, she conquers kingdoms using force when necessary. She raises an unbelievable army who would die for her.  She shows compassion when needed as well as a firm hand. But, like most mothers, she is a little too easy on some of her ‘children’ and not harsh enough on others as she is eventually overthrown and now, somehow due to one of her faithful dragons, she is back with the Dothraki, with a modicum of the respect that she had as Khal Drogo’s khaleesi. She has always been polite and determined but with good counsel has learned how to rule, now the Mother of Dragons just needs to figure out how to get the best out of her ‘children’.

Aunt May

Claim to Fame: Well not exactly a mother, but she has been Peter Parker’s rock forever.  She has been the one that keeps Peter grounded and when everything is going wrong, she is the one he can look to for help.  Despite her appearance however, she is no push over and she can fend for herself.  She is feisty and independent and she the one that a web-spinner can come to for a good home cooked meal.

Alien Queen

Claim to Fame:  Well, you have to look at it in some perspective.  All she was trying to do was make a home for her children.  Her hundreds of thousands of children.  Then some humans, who refused to be food, arrived and messed it all up.   One in particular, got so feisty that she nuked her home and kicked the Queen out of a hatch of an orbiting spaceship.

love that you included Molly Weasley. i’d include Lily Potter, too. Ultimate sacrifice for the wee one and all. and it was prolly no picnic for Ma Kent to raise a young alien with superpowers. i suspect he burnt or knocked a barn or two down by the time he was in grade school.
