Review: Mario & Luigi Paper Jam

This is actually my first Mario & Luigi experience and I can say it was the perfect game to play during snowmaggeden 2016. I started the game not knowing what to expect. The only Mario games I ever played were Mario Bros. on the old school Super Nintendo. Wow was I impressed.  Turn based fighting games are not my cup of tea. I usually play them as I watch a TV show or talk with people on the phone. I don’t have to pay attention much since I just select and leave it. Yet, even though this game was turn based you had to pay attention to hit a, b, or y at the right time in order to ensure you do the most damage. Of course, with most Mario games there are also mini puzzles and even during battle the counter attacks involve different techniques Later in the game you also get special deck of cards that help you in battle, this makes me happy because I feel like I’m playing YuGiOh and Pokemon at the same time. I can say my favorite part of the game is when you battle with your cardboard mecha Mario!

The paper mechanics of this game is pretty adorable. In context Luigi knocks over a book and paper characters begin to fly out into the 3d world. Paper Browser and Browser have kidnapped Paper Peach and Peach (this happens all the time). What’s great is that the paper mechanics of the game allow you to fit into tight spaces, stretch and grab all 3 characters across water, and have a character that basically has unlimited life! Paper Mario basically makes copies of himself and his copies get demolished before his life points do. The paper characters are quite clever and can “stack” and can multiply their damage. Lastly the Toads are easy to transport, they just fold up and fit in Mario’s pocket!

I’m ashamed to admit that I literally played this game for 5 hours straight. I settled in with my coffee and food and 5 hours later I found myself screaming at the game and then a little messaged popped up. The game told me to take a break. I still am itching to play the game though I told everyone I absolutely hate it. I get frustrated due to having to have perfect timing , but also switching consistently from hammer, jump and grab when running around the world. I can spend hours playing this game, it’s really entertaining and great for all ages.

In total 4.5 out of 5. Minus .5 for having a shallow story line (it’s not that great to be homest), but game mechanics wise I’m all in.
