Cosplay Spotlight: Michael L !

Where are you from originally or reside currently: I Currently reside in Washington DC and my ethnic background is Korean and Italian.

How long you have been cosplaying: I am still pretty new to cosplaying, but I have cosplaying, technically for 2 years.

Other Characters cosplayed: I currently have 2 cosplays.  My soul-cosplay, Eric Draven “The Crow” and Itachi Uchiha (Anbu Black-Ops from “Naruto”)  Maybe 3 if you consider the time I dressed up as Hello Kitty dressed as Jason Voorhees.  I called it “Hello Voorhees.”

1. Who or what inspired you to cosplay?

What inspired me to cosplay was my love of Halloween and the first time I ever dressed as my favorite comic book, movie and actor/martial artist, Eric Draven, The Crow & Brandon Lee and all the positive feedback that came with it.  Also, tbh, Awesome Con DC 2014, which was my first Con and cosplay and it was so amazing, I knew it was right where I wanted to be.

2. What do you do when you aren’t cosplaying?

When I am not cosplaying, I am a real estate agent in Maryland.  I hope to get more involved with my community done with/thru the cosplay community.

3.  What costumes have provided the biggest challenge and rewards so far and why?

My Eric Draven, “The Crow” costume has been the biggest reward for me because it means a lot to me on so many levels and peoples appreciation of my likeness to the character and my attention to detail humbles me.

4.  What is the best advice you would give someone new to cosplaying?

My advice to some one who is new to cosplaying is to try and get involved in all facets cosplaying entails and as far as the making of your different cosplays, don’t ever give up and allow yourself as much time as possible from beginning to end because there is a lot of trial and error and error, did I mention error. =)

5.  What is one thing the cosplaying community can do better when it comes to dealing with each other?

For the most part, I find that the true cosplaying community is great in dealing with each other.  However, I believe you can never have enough education towards cosplay bullying and sexual harassment thru panels and workshops.
