Aitch’s Next Issue Comic reviews week of 8/7/2013

Robocop: Last Stand
So Boom! Studios is trying its hand at the Robocop franchise and wants to do it with Frank Miller’s script which would have been Robocop 2. So how was this first issue? For me it was a mixed bag. It open with Detroit in the future (or right now really with the way things are going IRL, heh) the police and everyone is lawless, conglomerates will tear down property with people inside to pave the way to a gleaming city over the ashes of the dead. But one man-machine will try to bring an end to this. The opening was all over the place and although you have a sense of the hopelessness that’s going on, nothing really ever pulled at me long enough to have an interest in this book. The dialogue was terse and sporadic and the art direction was just like the book; scattered and all over the place. Oh yeah and there is a girl who wants to help Robocop and we are supposed to care. $3.99 is a steep price to ask for 8 issues and I may only give this one or 2 more before I get off this ride or better yet wait for the trade.

The Bunker
So what if you and your friends try to relive the Big Chill but when you bury your time capsule, you find out that somehow you commit the Holocaust to end all Holocausts? Then you found it in The Bunker. Not finding it on the stands? Then navigate yourself to http://www.thebunkercomic.com/ and check out one of the most intriguing webcomics you will read this summer. So, these friends go to bury this capsule only to find a bunker. Not only that, all but one of their names are on this bunker. Once inside, they find all of these letters of warnings about what is to be and naturally they are all scared shit-less. I enjoyed the premise of this book and while the excessive obscenities in the beginning threw me for a bit, the whole idea that these people get a warning from their future in detail does not get lost in that moment. Speaking of Lost, this story goes a long way to paying a bit of homage to the show. You close the issue with more questions and very few answers. What will be most intriguing is learning why one of the characters chose to warn everyone and why one of them gets no information whatsoever. The art also was solid for this story even in black and white. This web-comic is definitely a must see.
