Review Brew: Black Magick #2
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist: Nicola Scott
Last issue, after abruptly leaving a ritual, our heroine Rowan Black is tasked with diffusing a hostage situation. This was actually a trap to kill Rowan by the Culprit. Rowan finds the perpetrator was actually under a spell by higher forces who knew everything about Rowan being a witch. So this issue begins with the follow up from the ending of the hostage case. Rowan now has to deal with Internal Affairs, warn the coven of the new danger and deal with the fact that both sides of her life maybe forced together beyond her control.
The first issue grabs you an gave us an amazing ending, this issue gave us more character depth. We are introduced to Morgan -Rowan’s partner who has no idea of her other life but seems to trust Rowan with everything about his life. We also get a chance to see the relation Rowan has with the head of the Coven. It’s with these revelations that Greg’s writing truly shines. Greg’s pacing reminded me of a police procedural drama on tv which was fantastic. Another one of this series strengths is that the use of Magic is very minimal giving a more realistic feel in this world.
Nicola’s artwork is once again amazing. In both the first and second issue she has really stand out pieces. Her artwork is a bit haunting which fits this series so well. I was impressed with how well Nicola captures the expressions of each character. Which takes the story to another level as we the reader can see the fear and uncertainty Rowan is dealing with as these “Sinister” forces are starting to gather around her.
The series is fantastic, though this issue wasn’t as high impact as the first issue. Choosing to flesh out the world around Rowan makes this a truly compelling read. Now I am full hooked into this series and can’t wait for December for issue 3.
So I have to give Black Magick #2: 4 pentagrams out of 5.
