Fly on the wall

As Anton Bartok tries to escape in his grotesque human fly form he is killed before he could infect others with the transgenic code that once belonged to Seth Brundle. Now confined to an undisclosed location for seventeen days, Seth is looking for a cure to correct the mistake in made in trying to help Anton Bartok.

Brandon Seifert crafts a good second issue where we have Seth and his coworkers dealing with the fallout of what happened last issue. Having them in quarantine isolated from others really keeps them on edge and some wondering what’s happening outside of the their bug cage. Seth does go into details of the stages of being infected by the transgenic infection and breaking it down. It’s like having super powers but not without consequences which takes effects over the course of this issue. The story is very straight forward and does tend to build everything up slowly maybe too slow.

There is some faults with the story taking too long to progress. Characters could have been written better especially Seth, who has little to no emotion when saying anything which is pretty bad. I get that the guy wants to cure everyone but he seems like he doesn’t feel anything at all and just devoted to his work. We are given some interesting dialogue between him and Beth which turns into a webcam session between them while Seth is looking emotionless.

I really love the artwork of Menton and it’s gorgeous. The realistic look of Eric Stoltz and his coworkers look really good. He really makes the scenes look beautiful and dark but very detailed at the same time. The flow of the issue is great in showing us the effects of the transgenic infection which does lead to some interesting interactions between some characters. There are some bad things about the artwork as some characters looking very stiff and some others looking plastic. I noticed this while looking at Seth’s arm that it looked out of place with the artwork which was odd. There are some sexual scenes in the issue so watch out for that.

This issue of “The Fly Outbreak” was good but not great showing that paranoia of who is infected and the dangerous effects of the infected who are a threat to deal with. The characters could have been written better and given more depth especially Seth. The story needs to pick up the pace a little but knowing what the effects will have on the others did have some interesting situations. Some of the sexual scenes in the issue seemed a bit forced and could have been handled better. The art is great with its painted look but does suffer from some stiff looking characters. Overall I liked it but it could have better and I hope that improves in the next few issues.
