AV Brew: Women In Film – Spy
I feel so connected to this film. Not only because of how hilarious it is, but because Melissa’s character doesn’t fit into the mold of your standard “fat woman” even though that’s how everyone is actively viewing her and it impacts how everyone interacts with her. Which is, unfortunately, so true to life.
Susan is not a sad, pathetic character. She doesn’t take shit from other people. She pushes for what she wants, she breaks the rules because she trusts her instincts, and while she pines for someone who doesn’t deserve or appreciate her, she’s not a pick-me who is excited by getting attention from any man who shows her the littlest bit of interest (a la Aldo). Most importantly, when the heartthrob she desired for so long finally shows interest, she rejects him and chooses to invest her time in the people who have always been in her corner. Fat doesn’t mean “docile and passive” regardless of what the world constantly tells her a fat woman is supposed to be and that’s a message we should all get behind.
