AV Brew: 28 Days Of Black Film | Attack The Block

Attack The Block remains one of the best sci-fi movies of all time.

15 years ago, long before they would become known as Finn and The Doctor, John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker would star as the leads of one of the best sci-fi movies of the last 30 years: Attack The Block.

Set in South London, what begins as a night of young idiots doing absolutely dumb shite in an attempt to keep themselves from becoming the targets of the far more dangerous adults in their neighborhood, turns into a fight for survival as Moses (Boyega) and his crew stumble across an alien invasion.

Reluctantly aided by a local nurse (Whittaker), a burn out drug runner and his best client: a spoiled rich boy stoner the boys band together with their neighbors to save not just their neighborhood, but the world.

Brutally funny and highly subversive Attack The Block has genuine heart, some of the best action set pieces you’ll see (that still stand up due to the use of practical effects) and heartbreaking commentary on how the world treats those it deems not worth the effort.

The fact that this was Boyega’s first film role and he knocks it out of the park is the icing on the cake.

If you get a chance, give it a watch, I promise you it’ll be worth it!

P.S. As of this writing director and writer Joe Cornish, producer Edgar Wright and Boyega are in pre-production for the sequel with filming to begin this year.
