Morgan S is here to captivate you!

First name and last initial:
Morgan S.

Where are you from originally or reside currently?
I am from and currently still reside in Northern California

How long have you been cosplaying?
I will be going on cosplaying for nine years this summer.

What characters have you cosplayed the most?
I have cosplayed many characters over the years but the few that I have done more than one version are Princess Kida from The Lost Empire of Atlantis, Mystique from Marvel, and Catwoman for DC.

Who or what inspired you to cosplay?
I have always been into the arts and creating. I  actually stumbled onto cosplay while researching for a Halloween costume and was excited to discover how multi-disciplined it was. There are so many skills that can be learned for this hobby. Everything from sewing to sculpting to makeup to photography and videography. From there I discovered larger cosmakers like Cutie Pie Sensai, Kamui Cosplay, and Tiffany Gordon Cosplay. I still look to these individuals but nowadays I am most inspired by my friends in the community.

What do you do when you aren’t cosplaying (day job/hobbies)?
In my everyday life I work in Criminal Information for the Department of Justice. When I am not cosplaying or crafting I like to spend my time hanging out with friends and family, or spend some alone time with a book or video games.

What costumes have provided the biggest challenges/rewards so far and why?
I always like to challenge myself with learning new skills or trying to make or sew something I have never attempted with a majority of my builds but Queen of the Damned was definitely one that pushed me. This was one of the few live action cosplays that I have done and I really wanted to get as close to the source material without breaking the bank. I spent a lot of time researching her and even more time hand sculpting and painting all of the pieces for her crown, necklace, and skirt. She is definitely the most detailed cosplay I have made to date and I want to make more with the same level of detail in the future.

What is the best advice you would give to other cosplayers of color?
Be limitless! We are often faced with more struggles than our non-POC counterparts but that should not limit you from doing a hobby that brings you joy. Don’t let the perception of others keep you from cosplaying the characters you want to cosplay, or entering that competition, or posting on social media. There are going to be people that are going to try to tear you down but there are also going to be so many people rooting for you! Remember this is a hobby and should be done for yourself before anyone else.

What is one thing the cosplay community could do better when relating to one another?
Just remember that at the end of the day we are all a bunch nerds playing. I think those who have an elitist mindset or see cosplay as a beauty contest or look- alike contest need to be reminded of that. This hobby is meant to be fun.
