Music Brew: Too Much by Dove Cameron
After more than a year-long wait since her most previous release, Dove Cameron delivers and delivers hard with her first fierce single of 2025 titled “Too Much.”

Dove is just one of those people that emits this divine feminine supremacy, and that vibe definitely exudes from this single, for sureeeee. She did not leave me wanting with this track.
She embraces herself fully, instructing the recipient of the song’s message to “go find less” if they “say [she’s] too much.”
In short, it’s a banger. Say it with your damn chest, Dove; as you should. 👏👏

I was a little nervous – but also buzzing with anticipatory excitement – when I heard that Dove had released new music. Since it’s been a minute since she’s done so and I wasn’t super into Alchemical: Volume 1 as much as I had hoped I’d be (except for “Boyfriend” and “Sand” – oh my GOD), a lot felt like it was riding on this for me personally.
But daaaaamn, this did not miss!! It’s so good! Dove supplies fans with a beat that’s perfect for choreographing confident and seductive moves to, a chorus that makes you wanna Vogue on a runway, and a memo to never let go of.

“Doing too much, puffin’ up your chest / Where you goin’ in that little red dress? / Who you doin’ all that work for?” Dove sings in the second verse. However, she utilizes her voice in a nasally tone here, indicating that she’s imitating or mocking someone, and I just know that she’s making fun of the ex-boyfriend who actually said those egregious things to her. Even the lyrics on Genius have quote marks around that whole verse, alluding to the fact that: a) she is not the one talking and b) she’s serving as a mouthpiece for this asshole (to convey how much of a prick he is).
In an interview with Jennifer Hudson on her own self-named talk show, Dove shared that an ex-boyfriend of hers remarked, after she so genuinely told him how much of a good time she had at an event they just attended, that people like her more when she talks less.
HUH? Um…dump him NOW. What? These people still exist? Ew!

She elaborates on this concept of how womxn specifically are told and forced to shrink into spaces – physically and metaphorically – by the patriarchy…every day…in everything we do.
I would have loved a music video as opposed to a visualizer for this track, especially since it’s such a powerful re-entrance into her new era, but that’s okay. “Too Much” is too much of a hit for me to really complain.
And she’s got more coming soon! “French Girls” just dropped on May 2nd, so stay tuned for my review of that. (She also confirmed in the J-Hud interview that her first full-length studio album is coming this year?! I’m so ready.)
I am so happy to see her back in the game. I don’t blame her at all for stepping away. Artists shouldn’t be pressured to create if they aren’t feeling it or simply don’t want to; the art loses its point, then.
The next time anyone tries to make me feel small, guess what I’m putting on blast? “Too Much” by Dove Cameron.
