Who or what inspired you to Cosplay?
My inspiration to cosplay, believe it or not, was Spider-Man, (Tobey Maguire edition) and Soulja Boy when I was about 15 or 16 years old. He’d just dropped his 1st album and his music was everywhere. I got a number of comments from random people saying that I favored him. So, in that fashion I modeled myself after him going as far as to write Soulja Cook on my glasses to complete the look. Combining Soulja and cook being my last name. Yeah, he’s a meme now but then he was on everyone’s radar. Back then, I didn’t even know it was called Cosplay. Also, during the early 2000s is where I was introduced to Spider-Man. Ever since I saw that movie, I have resonated with the character. Both from comics and live action portrayals. As soon as I caught a glimpse of that suit, I knew I had to have it.

What do you do when you are not cosplaying?
Outside of cosplaying, I am a 10 year army veteran, I create and sell props using my 3-D printer, I have an ongoing series on YouTube called CHAMPIONS OF KOMBAT, I am a gamer, a husband and a father of two beautiful little girls.

What costumes have provided the biggest challenges/rewards so far and why?
So far there are three that have provided the biggest challenge for me: my Spider-Ranger, which is a collaboration between myself and another creator, my FNAF security breach: Glam Rock Bonnie suit(ongoing) and my Green Ranger helmet and props.

The Spider-Ranger was an original concept that I found online and got permission from the creator to bring to life. In a collaborative effort with another prop maker. We managed to take a simple drawing and turn it into something amazing. Altogether that project took about two months to complete.

The FNAF GR Bonnie Is still ongoing. I have completed the head and the upper torso. I just need to finish the rest of the body. It is a combination of EVA Foam and 3-D printing. The goal is to be completed by the end of the year.

My green Ranger Helmet was the first thing that I created as soon as I got my 3-D printer. Once I got past the learning curve of getting it set up through trial and error (and a lot of filament,) I finally managed to create a genuine replica of the bat in the sun, green Ranger helmet along with morpher and accessories.

What is the best advice that you could give to other cosplayers of color?
The best advice that I could give would be to enjoy your craft and do not worry about the thoughts of others on your work. You have it in yourself to create something great.  Do not keep your talent to yourself, share it with the world.

What is one thing that the Cosplay community can do better in relation to one another?
We need to understand that we are all in this community because of our passions for characters known and unknown. There is no need to gatekeep any specific character. Love one another and support every cosplayer, because even the best had a beginning.
