Vee V.

Where are you from originally or reside currently?
I was born and raised in the Bay Area and currently reside on the East Bay Area.

How long have you been cosplaying?
I’ve been cosplaying since 2008, but started to figure out my personal cosplay style in 2021.

What characters have you cosplayed the most?
Princess Daisy from Super Mario, Julie Joyful from Welcome Home, and Charlie Morningstar from Hazbin Hotel.

Who or what inspired you to cosplay?
In middle school, I used to watch a lot of homemade Naruto skits of teenagers a few years older than me, I thought they looked like a lot of fun and I wanted to try it out. I had also done what a lot of other young “weeaboos” were doing at the time trying to learn dances from anime, specifically the Hare Hare Yukai and the Lucky Star dance.

What do you do when you aren’t cosplaying (day job/hobbies)?
I am either working my warehouse job when I’m working, or I’m at home watching Star Trek: Next Generation with my partner or gaming with them and my friends. I’m also listening to podcasts and listening to hours long video essays about creepypastas and different kinds of media.

What costumes have provided the biggest challenges/rewards so far and why?
My Princess Daisy has really pushed me in learning how to do my makeup, most notably exaggerating my eye size and reshaping my lips. I prefer to look as cartoony as possible but with clean edges, so learning to draw on a new set of lashes or making my lips form into the perfect pout. All of my Hazbin cosplays have shown me that it’s easy to really design your own way of portraying a character, especially when one of them is a literal TV head.

What is the best advice you would give to other cosplayers of color?
There’s a lot more lovers than haters. Put on the cosplay.

What one thing could the cosplay community do better when relating to one another?
Understanding that fandom has always been here, and that not everyone is going to like what you like. We’re all a bunch of nerds in costume.
