One of the joys of travel is seeing the huge landmarks, the ones that everyone wants to see. While it’s always good to go where ‘the locals’ go, there’s something about seeing that one ‘thing’ that every country or city has. It could be something whimsical and fun, like The Eye, or it could be something emotionally and historically significant, like Robben Island Prison. No matter the reason, every country has some place that is the place to go see when you visit.
Now, if you’re anything like me, you do your research before you go; things like when is the best time to visit, who’s the best tour guide or where is the closest yet not overly expensive place to stay. However, there is a dark and yet hilarious underbelly to travel: the review. Oh, not of the places folx stayed or of the service they received, no this is far more insane: it’s a review of the landmark itself.
That’s where One Star Wonders comes in, Mike Lowery’s hysterical set of illustrations of the absolutely bonkers one star reviews of famous landmarks. Each wonderfully snarky and simple, using the reviews as both inspiration and as the text for each panel. Simply put, this is a perfect coffee table book that will make you laugh out loud, while marveling at the state of our educational system and the entitlement that all of us have, whether we realize it or not.

A while back my girlfriend and I came across a 1-star review for the Grand Canyon, which apparently is “boring”, and it’s become a personal meme between us. This is going to make a great gift for her!
