Jason Todd: Teacher. It actually has a nice ring to it and, based on canon and Jason’s thirst for education, would’ve probably been the career he chose had Willis and Cathrine been able to give him the life they wanted for him.
Red Hood: Teacher, on the other hand, makes me both happy and genuinely concerned. In this issue Jason takes Lex up on the offer he made him 2 issues ago and becomes a mentor for Lex’s Doom Bringers of Tomorrow: Cloud 9, DNA, Babe in Arms and Devour.
One of the things I like about this issue is how we see all that Jason learned from Bruce incorporated into his teaching methods. However, what’s more interesting to me, is seeing what he learned from Talia and Ducra so clearly laced throughout his teaching as well. Which comes in handy when dealing with a bunch of meta-human children who think they know everything but haven’t a clue how the world actually works.
We get a different flavor of Jason with this issue, one that expands on what we already know about the character. Already you can tell that Jason gives a damn about these kids and it shows, whether they realize it or not, in how he teaches them and how he always makes a point of putting himself between them and any potential danger. It’s incredibly endearing. It will be interesting to see how Lex himself feels about Jason’s methods as there’s no way he didn’t know when he recruited him that Jason wasn’t going to actively train these children to be anything other than themselves, whoever that may be.
Kenneth Rocafort returns to do the art this issue and honestly, as much as I love Dexter Soy & Veronica Gandini and Pete Woods’ respective runs on this comic, I genuinely adore Rocafort’s work. His run on Wonder Woman is still some of my favorite artwork ever and that stands true now. I don’t know how long we’ll have him on the book but I’ll take it for as long as I can get it.
As Artemis and Bizarro work their way home and Jason finds a new student, things are going to get lit.
