The peaceful town of Mountain View is a wonderful place. An idyllic and very out of the way spot where the sun shines and nothing changes – ever. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a peaceful life. Assuming you can even find Mountain View. Oh, and you also shouldn’t mind living on top of a dark secret of the Cold War – perhaps the darkest secret of the cold war. It’s a place where you can raise a family in safety… because the sheriff is ex-CIA. The neighbors all know each other… since they were all covert operatives. But why build a picture-perfect, nearly inaccessible, all American town…but not build it anywhere in America? Easy. You build it to protect a single little boy named, Roger. They say it takes a village to raise a child. So what kind of child needs an entire town populated by covert operatives to keep an eye on him? The kind of child that may prove be the single most diabolical weapon mankind has ever created.

In the space of three issues, Dead Hand has crafted a story that blends elements of James Bond, War Games, Twin Peaks, Picket Fences, Eureka! and the Twilight Zone episode ‘It’s a Good Life’ to craft a red hot page-turner of a story, taking place during the still-unfolding fallout of the Cold War and the emergence of a second. The gritty art and colors simultaneously give us a world that highlights the grave nature of covert operations as well as the stale, manufactured façade of the town of Mountain View as seen through the eyes of its increasingly bored and disenchanted youth. Youth who are just about to see past the mask that hides Roger from the rest of the world. It seems a great deal of people went through a lot of trouble to keep Roger a secret, but then again: no secret lasts forever.

Let’s just hope they can keep Roger happy.

I have been authorized by the Secretary to give this book 4 ‘Top Secret’ Dossiers out of 5

If you like Dead Hand you’ll want to check out titles such as Ghost Station Zero, Ghost Money, C.O.W.L. and Deep State. You won’t be disappointed.
