A chance for Miles Morales to be featured in any of Marvel’s movie properties has been on the minds of Spider-Man fans for several years, and the new trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks like it will not disappoint. This thing looks AWESOME.
Following the smashing success of Spider-Man: Homecoming last year, it was imperative that Sony find a way to make their next Spidey movie blow fans away, and this trailer really makes it feel like they’ve succeeded.
While we know very little about the animated film’s actual plot at this point, the new footage in this trailer feels like it’s setting up a great film version of the actual Spider-verse that comic fans have come to know and love. In what seems like the beginnings of this set-up, young Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) will meet one version of Peter Parker (Jake Johnson), who will coach him through becoming the Spider-Man he is destined to become. The addition of Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) just adds another layer of awesome to this trailer, and we’ve yet to see what role she’ll play in young Miles’ development. Finally, we’ll even get the iconic Lily Tomlin as Aunt May, so we may see a bit of snark and comedy from the lovable voice of reason in Peter Parker’s life.
It looks like we’ll see this terrific trio do everything in their power to protect New York City from enemies like the Prowler (voiced by Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali) and the powerful Kingpin (Liev Schreiber), and in the process potentially save the Multiverse itself. With both actors being veterans of Marvel video properties, this could be a huge boost to the upcoming film.
Aside from the fact that this is Miles freakin’ Morales, another thing about this trailer that really struck us here at PCU is the hyper-stylized art style and animation. Sony Pictures Animation looks to be taking the look of this film to the next level, by bringing in lots of pops of color and a style that’s unlike almost anything we’ve seen in a Spider-Man property before. The sweeping visages of this version of New York City, combined with the tight shots of Miles’s Spider-Man evading cars as he swings through the city at street level look like they’ll really bring a cool feel to this film, and the animations of the different characters bring a great look at the emotion of these fan favorite characters.
All in all, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks like it’s going to be an action-packed ride. With fans finally getting a Miles Morales movie, let’s hope that Sony can live up to the hype they’re creating.
