Marvel Announces “Star Wars: Binks” Prelude to “The Last Jedi” by Bendis and Bagley

In a move no one saw coming, Marvel Comics released the following teaser image for its next Star Wars miniseries: Star Wars: Binks. The cover and title speak for themselves, but yes, Marvel is apparently doing a series about the much-lamented prequel character, Jar-Jar Binks.

The double surprise moment? It’s by the famous Ultimate Spider-Man team of Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley.

And the third surprise? The cover reads: “Journey to The Last Jedi,” an ostensible reference to this December’s eighth film in the Star Wars saga and much-awaited follow-up to The Force Awakens.

The subtitle recalls the “Journey to The Force Awakens” project in the months before the seventh film was released. The banner covered a series of novels, along with Marvel’s Shattered Empire miniseries by Greg Rucka, which offered clues and hints as to how the galaxy changed after Return of the Jedi, giving readers a taste of the movie to come. “Journey to The Last Jedi” suggests that the Binks comic will somehow lead into the next film in the same way.

Writer Brian Michael Bendis offered only a few clues. “No, Jar-Jar isn’t Snoke,” he laughed. “And he’s not appearing in The Last Jedi, either. But the recent novel Aftermath: Empire’s End offered our first look at where Jar-Jar ended up. Mark and I are going to pick up from that story.”

Why Jar-Jar? Bendis chuckled. “We always knew I’d end up on a Star Wars title. I’ve just been waiting for the perfect one. But I wanted a challenge, and trust me, this is going to be the Jar-Jar story to end all stories.”

Star Wars: Binks will be a 5-issue miniseries which launches July 5, 2017.
