We pick up where we left off in CCHACE #3 with the EBX team fast on the trail of Cave, Chloe, and Wild Dog. Johnny’s leading them and doing his best to keep his team alive and get Cave and Chloe back in one piece. Unfortunately, not everyone on the EBX end has the same agenda and things take a turn for the screwed, right quick. On the other end of things, we find out exactly why Borsten wanted Chloe; seems she’s the only one who can unlock the hidden pathways of Muldroog, the question now is…why?

Way and Rivera make sure this issue continues the action of the previous issues while giving us more of a look into Cave, Chloe, and Wild Dog’s past. They open old wounds, deftly and brutally – there’s a truly chilling scene with Wild Dog that had me yelling ‘NO! Nooooo, please no!’ – while balancing plot momentum like a pro. One of the things I like about this book, among many, is how it honestly makes you think anyone could die (or go bugnuts), including Cave, at any moment. You don’t see that very often in comics, and while that’s one of the comforting things about comics, it’s nice to see a book take the chance. When you truly fall in love with the characters, knowing any of them could take a header ups the ante.

As always Oeming, Filardi and Robins make each page team with life and detail. This book is honestly visually breathtaking, yet, for all that’s going on in each page, it’s not muddled or busy. No detail is unimportant, but each page lifts the story up.
