The first gameplay look at ‘Nioh’ is gorgeous

Yesterday, the PlayStation Access YouTube channel published a video showing off some of the gameplay for the upcoming (and highly anticipated) game Nioh.

As the two hosts mention in the video, the game seems reminiscent of the Souls games & Ninja Gaiden. The graphics & art style remind us a lot of Bloodborne.  The camera angles & combat have a lot of Ninja Gaiden inspiration to them. As you can see, the ambiance is relatively dark, but there are some amazing demonstrations of color & light, in order to really make things of interest really pop. This is very apparent in the cut scene we can see in the video, where the boss battle with the Ogress starts. As her tears of blood fall, beautiful red flowers grow where they touch the ground.

Since we’re talking about the boss battle, can we just take a moment to appreciate how frenetic & fast-paced the combat is in this game? The way the Ogress moves, and the ferocity with which she swings her claws at the protagonist just evokes a feeling of urgency to defeat her. All the while, the freedom of movement that seems to be offered in this title will undoubtedly give players a real sense of power when wielding Nioh’s varied weaponry.

Running on the PS4 Pro, this game is said to stay at an impressive 60 frames-per-second (fps), and the animations all look wonderfully smooth. It looks like Koei Tecmo Games has done a really wonderful job with this one.

Nioh is slated for release exclusively on the PS4 in North America on February 7th, 2017, then on February 8th & 9th in Europe and Japan, respectively. I don’t know about you all, dear readers, but this is a title that I am definitely looking forward to immersing myself in next year. What do you all think of Nioh? Will you be getting this title? Let us know in the comments!
