If you missed the first issue like I did, that’s okay. We get the “Previously in…” bit on page three and it drops you nicely into the story without skipping a beat. If you’re thinking that it’s going to be terrible because Joss Whedon didn’t write it, then you’d be mistaken. Chris Roberson (iZombie) does a fantastic job capturing the nuances of each character in the vernacular used by Whedon in the series. This story is one that I can see playing on screen with no problems.

The background art is simplistic in nature with the muted colors that fans of “Firefly” know so well. The art works for this series because it’s not bogged down in the larger details of the scenes. However, each character is detailed enough that they are able to exist in the cinema of our brain as the actor that originally brought them to life.

The story focuses a bit more on River and her backstory, and that’s quite alright because it’s really good. Plenty of butt kickin’ by Mal and the gang in an effort to stay ahead of the group after River. Here’s a hint about them… they are all as badass as she is. They claim to be River’s family. Fans know that River had some bad things happen to her before Simon rescued her and they joined the crew of the Serenity. Well, this is where we find out more about just what happened. Who knew there was a whole clan of badass brainwashed girls, just like River?

Fans will not be disappointed with this comic. I give this 5 Serenities out of 5.
