Alright, Assassins & Templars! Gather ‘round, and check out all of the things being said about the next installment of the Assassin’s Creed franchise!
Release Date Timeframe
As we all know, earlier this year, Ubisoft confirmed that they would be delaying the release of the next Assassin’s Creed installment, effectively ending the company’s run of yearly releases for the franchise. After the debacle that was the horribly glitchy & flawed Assassin’s Creed: Unity, this could be a boosy to the company, as it would allow them more time for perfecting the games.
Then, back in September, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot spoke to Gamespot.com, and alluded to the idea that fans may not see a sequel in 2017, but instead will have to wait. “What we saw in the development of the next [Assassin’s Creed] was that we had an opportunity to take it to another level,” Guillemot stated. “So we said we’ll take all the time it takes to make the experience fantastic. It was feasible because we have other games. There’s a huge potential in this game to revolutionize the IP, so we said, ‘Let’s make sure we change our model so we have more time and that we can bring back a greater experience.”
It’s been widely known amongst fans of the franchise that 2016 would not bring us a new AC game. However, it seems that Mr. Guillemot is saying we may not get our next installment in 2017 either. The Ubisoft CEO has only offered up one statement as to the release date: “It will be back when it’s ready”. We can certainly hope that will be soon.
This information comes on the heels of some recent statements given to IGN by Ubisoft editorial VP Tommy Francois, in which he expressed that the company believes that the alpha stage for the next iteration of Assassin’s Creed & Far Cry games “needs to be one year before release.” In his own colorful way, Francois added, “This is the goal we’re going for. Alpha one year before, more quality, more polish. So if this means biting the [bullet] and not having an Assassin’s game or a Far Cry game [in 2017], f*#% it.” F*#% it, indeed…
Title, Story, Gameplay, and Setting
In January of this year, Kotaku released information which suggested that the next installment of the AC franchise was being codenamed “Empire”. The game is reported to take place in ancient Egypt, and may be the first chapter in another trilogy of games focusing on the same Assassin (much like 2009 – 2011’s ‘Ezio Trilogy’). According to the same Kotaku report, the new trilogy could also explore Greece & Rome around that same time period. The rumor mill has also revealed that our (as-yet-unnamed) protagonist could be a direct ancestor of both Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze.
What say you, dear readers? Are you ok with Ubisoft taking their sweet time on the next installment of the AC franchise? What do you hope to see in Empire? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
