Does Scooby Apocalypse Tie Into DC Rebirth?
Posted on May 25, 2016 by Adam Frey in Comics and Comic News // 1 Comment
DC Rebirth is out today, and fans were shocked to learn (mostly through early leaked news) that DC is now incorporating Alan Moore’s Watchmen into the DC Universe. Rebirth reveals that Watchmen‘s Dr. Manhattan was responsible for the creation of the Nu52 DC Universe, and there’s hints that the Watchmen influence has spead beyond that one character. (Over at Bleeding Cool, Rich Johnston speculates that several of the Nu52’s characters are, in fact, either analogues or re-creations of Watchmen‘s main cast.) One of the biggest moments in Rebirth is Batman finding the Comedian’s trademark blood-stained “happy face” pin in the Batcave.
But here’s the oddity: this week also sees the debut of Scooby Apocalypse, part of DC’s decidedly adult remake of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon shows. This week’s Scooby Apocalypse ALSO features a scene where a character is holding a happy face stained by a red streak. Granted, it’s probably ketchup instead of blood, but it’s there, and it’s hard NOT to think of Watchmen when you see it.

It’s possible that Scooby Apocalypse authors J.M. DeMatteis, Keith Giffen, and Howard Porter are just trolling us, but…are they? With a Multiverse of worlds available, and “regular” Scooby frequently meeting DC characters over in Scooby-Doo Team-Up, is it possible that Dr. Manhattan ALSO created this new Scoobyverse and maybe the rest of the new Hanna-Barbera lineup?
Keep watching this one. Scooby Apocalypse may be the stealth Rebirth tie-in you didn’t know was out there.
