Review Brew: Sinestro #22

Writer: Cullen Bunn

Artist: Martin Coccolo

Colors: Blond

After defeating the Paling on Earth, Sinestro gives leadership of the Sinestro Corps over to his daughter, Soranik Natu. Being a leader can’t be easy, especially with the resurgence of the rage-filled Red Lanterns.

I liked this issue of Sinestro, and it’s interesting to see the Sinestro Corps under different leadership. Having Soranik become the leader, you can see the struggle that is going on with her, and the decisions she has to make. Sinestro doesn’t like her decisions, but she is now the leader, and he has to accept it. Bunn’s writing is immaculate, as it makes Soranik see from a different perspective of being a leader. Even looking on leads to the missing Green Lanterns and weaving in characters from the DC Universe like Starro and Solomon Grundy. With new leadership, there is deceit in the ranks and with that, Sinestro brings out his inner circle. I do like this as Sinestro tries to keep the peace from the shadows. It’s Sinestro after all, I wouldn’t expect less from him. I don’t have problems with the writing, but the one thing that bugs me is the Red Lanterns. Bunn killed them off in Lobo’s title and brought them back with blood magic. I know the Sinestro Corp and Red Lanterns don’t like each other, but the conflict between them does get stale.

Martin Coccolo continues as the artist for this issue and the art looks great. The opening scene looks phenomenal, as Dex-Starr tears through the glass of a space station and rips off the flesh of a scientist’s face. I know it’s brutal, but opens the story up with a bang. Throughout the issue, Coccolo does an amazing job of showcasing the lives of the Sinestro Corp, and the people of Korugar, who are trying to rebuild their lives. The characters looks good, especially the faces of characters and how detailed their facial features are. The two pages that show the Sinestro Corp battling with Starro, shapeshifting Durlans, and even Lobo, look awesome. Each battle looks well done and captures the might of the Sinestro Corp. The colors by Blond make the artwork look better and gives the scenes a lot more depth.

One of DC’s most underrated titles is good and makes things interesting with new leadership. The writing, art, and colors are amazing, but with the Red Lanterns returning it did bother me. I still enjoyed this issue and I can’t wait for the next issue to drop for this title.
