When we last left off, Princess Misty of Beldora was in Another Castle. Okay, I owe you a better recap than that. In #1, Lord Badlug had achieved his goal of kidnapping the princess, as he had once kidnapped her mother. Though, it wasn’t because Misty is a traditional princess who is incapable of protecting herself. Rather her kidnapped and imprisoned state is due to the fact she has a kind heart and a deep sense of duty.
While issue one was about telling us what was at stake and getting our heroine in trouble, issue two is about the true start of her adventure. However, Misty isn’t the only one in danger this time around. Prince Pete faces the verminotaur, one of many creatures that stand between him and “saving” Misty. As the fight unfolds, however, it appears the prince needs the saving more than her.
Despite Gorga’s belief that the “dashing” prince will somehow make it there alive, Misty knows he needs their help. It becomes even more urgent because Misty’s plan to save everyone, her kingdom and the subjects of Badlug’s kingdom, hinges on Pete making it there alive. There are bribes, a witch, a heist, and a cliffhanger ending this issue.
Andrew Wheeler writes a strong and truly noble princess who has skill, but also has problems and obstacles to challenge them. Wheeler also manages to balance high stakes and a wholesome story without cutting corners.
The tone of the story and Paulina Ganucheau’s bright colors and whimsy marry perfectly together. Misty’s look reminds me mostly of Princess Peach (famous for being in “another castle” in the Super Mario games), but for some reason I want to say a hint of Zelda is also there. Her art makes me long for an animated movie of this tale.
This is a great read for people looking for strong female characters and a fun, all ages story.
I give Another Castle 4 out of 5 Verminotaurs.
