Manga Review: Kamisama no Iutoori Ni Ch. 151 “Punishment x Old Maid”

Written by: Kaneshiro Muneyuki

Art by: Fujimura Akeji

After the death of Kagemaru Shimura, only twelve finalists remain in the “Judgement Old Maid” game. Who will live and die in this issue, find out in my review.

If you haven’t been following this manga, it’s the second part of “Kamisama no Iutoori” (As The Gods Will). The story pits high school students in games such as Daruma ga Koronda (a game like Red Light/Green Light) with deadly stakes. Part two of the series starts on the same day as the first, but follows different students, who didn’t go to class that day, facing different challenges.

Well, nobody dies this issue except Shimura, but we do find out how he died. The reason is because he pulled the card called “Pick me and you die” from Male/Females cards. With a series that puts its players in death games, it’s expected that this wasn’t a normal game to begin with. Through Ipanema, we also learn about that there may be other cards with various effects. Which also seems to be affecting her. After that, the game gets ready for round two and it’s revealed how this version of the game was created. The dialogue is good and ramps up the tension. I like that there still a freak out moment, but after what the players have been through, I’m surprised it happened. The element of cards having effects that punish the players, makes things interesting as it’s like a box of chocolates with each draw. Even a new strategy presents itself between friendly players and enemies. With the addition of Kimimaro (who put the kids through the death games in the first series), it takes some of the tension away with his antics and injects some humor to even out the tension. Even his dialogue about why he wanted to join was pretty funny.

The art by Fujimura Akeji looks great and shows a lot of expression on the characters faces with each card draw. Because of a card effect, Ipanema’s face looks weird and distorted. I had to go back and see if her face was always like that. Fujimura captures the look of the characters perfectly and the line work is impeccable.

Kamisama no Iutoori Ni is a good chapter that has twists and turns around every corner. The writing is done well and the art is great. It does have an ending that could spell the end for one character, but with this game, anything can happen. The only thing that has me wondering is how long is this going to drag out for with only twelve people left. Well, only time will tell.
