PS4 Software Update 3.50 Is Live As Of Today

The most recent PS4 software update (v3.50) was released this morning, and at just under 300 MB, it seems to have several new features that gamers may appreciate.  The PlayStation Access YouTube channel also released a video detailing 14 of the top things that PS4 users should know about the update.

We’ve also compiled a list for you here:

  • The feature called ‘Play Together’ has been added to [Party]. If you’re playing an online multiplayer game which supports the feature, you can automatically invite other players and start game sessions immediately.
  • You can now use Remote Play on a computer (Windows PC or Mac) that has PS4 Remote Play installed (you can get the client here). First, download the PS4 Remote Play app & install it on your PC or Mac.  Connect it to your PS4, and you’re set to go.  FYI, Sony recommends that you have a high-speed internet connection with upload/download speeds of at least 12 Mbps in order to get the best experience from the Remote Play feature.
  • If you’re a social gamer, you can now create events by selecting [Events] -> [Create Event].  Set the details (Date/Time, # of players who can join, etc.), and then you can send out the invitations to those with whom you want to play.  You can even create these events using the [Messages] feature.
  • Notification messages are now displayed when Friends come online. The setting can be changed by going to [Settings] -> [Notifications] -> [When Friends Go Online].
  • You can now broadcast gameplay on dailymotion (great if you like sharing your gameplay achievements with others).
  • If you’re feeling particularly introverted, you can now change your online status so that you appear offline, but you’ll remain connected.  When you log in to the console, just select [Log In With Online Status ‘Appear Offline’] from the ‘Options’ menu. You can also change your status from your profile screen or the quick menu. However, there are a few caveats to this:
    • Within a game, you may appear online to other players (duh).
    • Other players may be able to see your use of social features (like ‘Share’).
    • You’ll appear as online when you sign on to PS3, PS Vita, or PS TV.

Another interesting feature for this update, is the Teen Account Creation feature.  This allows players aged 13-17 years to create their own accounts, and play in offline mode until a parent or guardian approves the account, and then the parental control set-up can be completed (for my thoughts on parental monitoring of kids’ gaming habits, check out my ESRB article).

There’s lots more to this update, so here’s hoping that this one keeps things going for as long as possible with little to no problems.
