Batman V Superman: What it means for Wonder Woman

Heroines continue to be lackluster when it comes to the spotlight of superhero movies and even in television shows. Although, these beauties come in as side characters, few have come across the screen with such awe and well deserved presence. Finally, we may have a chance to see Wonder Woman on screen with a possibility of more than just a cameo.

Before we break down on what the Batman vs Superman movie means for Wonder Woman, I’d like to take a look at some things I’ve noticed. Not too long ago we had an issue with Marvel providing Black Widow merchandise, but not even just Black Widow but other female Marvel heroine merchandise as well. It started a #WeWantWidow movement that you can read more about here. Yet, if we look at DC Comic’s merchandising we can clearly see there is a vast amount of female characters to choose from, including villains such as Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. The heroines we see in their bombshell attire includes Hawkgirl, Catwoman and most of all Wonder Woman. You can see some of the merchandise sold at Hot Topic, Spencer’s and FYE; including shirts, swimsuits, socks, vinyls and blankets. What Batman is to men, Wonder Woman is to women. She’s DC’s foremost heroine for women, she is equal to and just as big as Superman and Batman, and she has plenty of merchandise in stores.

So what does this mean for Wonder Woman? It means that it’s been a long time coming. With merchandising that’s already heavily produced, this would definitely help boost sales while paving a way for an already announced Wonder Woman movie. It’s almost perfect timing, as DC covers what the fans have wanted: more gender diversity on the big screen. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen a live action Wonder Woman since 1979! The stakes for Wonder Woman are high, as this movie is bringing someone onto the big screen many fans have been asking for. Wonder Woman is going to be well received, and I can see sales skyrocketing as DC receives more demand for female character merchandise.  We all have seen Megan Fox photoshopped as Wonder Woman, while the internet begged for a Wonder Woman movie for years!

Wonder Woman is iconic. She screams girl power and feminism, and she doesn’t need a male counterpart to help her. Wonder Woman is a beast all on her own. She is clearly a hero born to do exactly what she is about to – bring heroines to the forefront. Not only is she independent, strong and witty, but she has helped save Batman & Superman plenty of times, and has always been equal to them in strength and direction. Princess Diana has also always been the face of DC for heroines. I feel that even if the Batman V Superman movie turns out to be a bust, as long as Wonder Woman takes the audience’s breathe away fans will scream. She may just make this movie.

In the end the only reason I know I’ll go see this movie, is to see the Amazonian Princess on screen. It’s about time she appeared, and I know it’s going to pave the way for more heroines. So suit up ladies, let’s support this move so we can ensure Wonder Woman gets what she deserves!
